White Rainbow: Sea Thru EP

Posted by Jakub

Its November and its time to start digging for new ambient projects to listen to in the background while you take up a new hobby over the winter like putting up new handmade wallpaper in a very OCD fashion, reorganizing those sport cards you collected in the 90’s, re-lacing your shoes in that new way you like them now, or wiping the dust off your plants that you barely water. I highly suggest that you check out White Rainbow’s new EP See Thru thats listed under the always enjoyable NAME YOUR OWN PRICE option, you won’t be disappointed if your a Loscil or Benoit Pioulard fan.

Lawrence+Active Child+Tame Impala+Sports

In 2008, I put down Lawrence’s other alias Sten as my favorite album for that year, now i’m trying to dig deeper in his catalog for you to understand why Peter Kersten’s music is full of charm and delight. This unnamed track has soo much atmosphere, it makes me feel like Peter really gets to enjoy quiet days off and writes songs about calm scenery he sees.

School Of Seven Bells did this unbelievable remix of my favorite Active Child song. Its like standing in windtunnel thats blowing soft flower pedals down it and also you can hear the original version playing and you have your eyes closed.

One of the best records of the year just had the pleasure of being remixed by one of my favorite remixers from last year. Once it gets going it starts touching that epic Caribou sound that many people love I think.

Honestly, I had to give this song a chance by Sports, look at that cover! I know they didn’t get the art made recently, there’s no way. I was surprised and happy to that I did check it out though, nice easy rock with muddy mid-tone elements that actually don’t sound that bad.

Baths+J. Wakeman+The Soft Moon+McBride

Maybe not your usual “Pop Song” but we all wish it was something that could push aside the Enimem collabo’s and Will Smith’s daughter new song on the radio these days.

Jesse Wakeman might sound like Mayer Hawthorne 45 that travelled back in time and was put in a muggy shed to sit in for 50+ years but that doesn’t discredit the sound he is honing on and nailing properly.

Everything that i’ve heard from The Soft Moon has been what drives me back to a full bar of energy this summer especially if i’m noticeably becoming sluggish, its my more natural 5 hour energy drink.

Many know Brian McBride because of his Stars Of The Lid project, I personally have been enjoying this song not only for the fun name but how he makes you feel like your being delivered to the ocean by virgin clouds and gently being placed in bath water like temperature near Iceland.

R. O’Donnell+Sun Airway+Com Truise+Games

Awhile back I was lucky enough to open up for Roger O’Donnell(The Cure), it was just a DJ set and after we sat at the merch booth together. Roger had some great stories but what was even better was the mood and tone he set with his live set. He would play this white Moog that I think had blue lights coming from it and just calmed the crowd with his melodies, a definite huge influence for a lot of the indie synth music coming out these days.

People Can Do The Most Amazing Things is in my top 5 singles for 2010 no doubt, this remix by Sun Airway is distorted lo-fi clubby take, kind of a nice change of pace, parts of it remind me of Star Guitar.

Com Truise is working away at his LP and upcoming EP, here’s a taste of some work in progress, I see big things for this guy, an onslaught of melody and great basslines is a formula that can’t go wrong.

I’m addicted to Games, do you hear the melody flirting with Tears For Fears Head Over Heels a little? or is it something else? either way its on repeat, I guess I start hearing things after I listen to it 40+ times.

John Roberts+Ashra+Jelinek&Triosk+SKM

John Roberts new LP entitled Glass Eights has odes to old deep house and carries along at a pace that should interest new listeners to the sound that Dial excels at. Imagine standing alone in a parking lot full of snow at night and your under a amber street light and watching the snow gently going back up into the sky.

Ashra is definitely a go to on a road trip, no one can hate this after your mind has been numbed by 12k+ miles of highway driving in 40 days, he man sounds like he’s playing the clouds.

I’m a sucker for this speedy atmospheric jazz sound in Neckless AKA Neck Face, you could put this on for 30-40 mins and I would just wait happily for the song to resolve.

Mark Kozelek has done it again, if maple syrup needed music to allow you to collect it in the bitter cold you’d need this song on repeat.

Warm Ghost + Teebs + Woodsman + Raime

I have 4 tracks today for you that you can completely get lost in.

While i’ve been away on tour, i’m kicking myself for missing a few shows, one of them was this Light Asylum & Warm Ghost show. The flyer is amazing for this night. Warm Ghost has this great moody remix of Deerhunter’s Lotus Plaza that i’ve been waiting to post, i’m loving this swelling feeling it gives off.

Shigeto turned on onto Teebs, they both use bells and chimes soo well, this Burner track is one of many songs on the album that I can see myself falling in love with. I’m happy to hear Brainfeeder is picking up a release that doesn’t need hyped beats to show that they can dominate with great signings like this.

This Woodsman track is gentle noise that just feels around in your ear, I wouldn’t know what the singer was saying until you read the track name and just becomes clear as day.

Something a little bit on the darker side, this Raime song has a stealth pulse that I love, its in no rush.

Benoit Pioulard+No Age+Kiyo+Ellen Allien

I should just post this whole new Benoit Pioulard record because its just that good. In the song Tower Benoit serenades but most importantly sets the atmosphere in the intro with plenty of details of him shuffling around and then the addicting guitar playing steps in, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, buy it here.

I found another track from the new No Age record that the blog couldn’t be without, its dizzying and noisy with simple additions, hard to not fall in love with it.

I remember when I first heard my first few albums from Schematic records, I couldn’t wrap my head around how long it would have taken to write a song like this one by Kiyo. I imagined many nights slaving over obsession on sequencing and glitching out every minuet speck of sound, I thought my mind would give up if I had to produce this, i’m glad someone stepped up and did it.

I needed to end this post on the upswing, the production on this Ellen Allien track is pretty breathtaking, so bubbly and inviting, each new part that floats in is like a smoke ring fully intact passing by your eyes, beautiful techno will have its day again soon.
