Box: A Live Performance Film

Posted by Jon M

We’ve truly entered an exiting era of new “user experiences” and no front is exempt. From web and mobile platforms, art installations, to film and video games, there seems to be a sense that no frontier is unreachable and what one day seemed impossible, has been surpassed beyond our wildest dreams, forever altering our perception on whats “real”. Enter Box.

Box is a live performance film by Bot & Dolly, that documents a first ever live synchronized performance using 3D Projection Mapping, Robots and Actors:

Box explores the synthesis of real and digital space through projection-mapping on moving surfaces. The short film documents a live performance, captured entirely in camera. Bot & Dolly produced this work to serve as both an artistic statement and technical demonstration. It is the culmination of multiple technologies, including large scale robotics, projection mapping, and software engineering. We believe this methodology has tremendous potential to radically transform theatrical presentations, and define new genres of expression.

About Bot & Dolly

Chromosaturation

Posted by Jon M

The Chromosaturation by Carlos Cruz-Diez relates to the idea that in the origin of every culture lies a primary event as a starting point. A simple situation that generates a whole system of thoughts, sensitivity, myths, etc. The Chromosaturation creates an artificial environment composed of three color chambers: one red, one green and one blue, that immerse the visitor in a completely monochrome situation. This experience creates disturbances in the retina, accustomed to receive wide range of colors simultaneously. The Chromosaturation can act as a trigger, activating in the viewer the notion of color as a material or physical situation, going into space without the aid of any form or even without any support, regardless of cultural beliefs.

Flying Lotus’ New Live Visual Setup

Posted by Jakub

With the latest trend of live shows trying to out do each other Flying Lotus goes dreamy and multi-layered with projections onto him for his project Layer 3:

new mini-documentary peeks behind the scenes of Flying Lotus’s new live audiovisual extravaganza, Layer 3 – which the Academy was proud to assist with developing in support of the Until The Quiet Comes tour. Made with the help of visual artists Strangeloop and Timeboy, the trio have devised a method of transporting FlyLo into outer dimensions using two transparent scrims and interactive front and rear projectors, conjuring nothing short of the acid-fried Space Odyssey “Stargate” scene.

Weekend Inspiration: Tomas Saraceno

Posted by Jon M

Argentinian artist Tomas Saraceno goes beyond the traditional conceptions of place, time, gravity and our familiar notions of architecture. Saraceno is an artist and architect whos visions for cities floating in the air have led him to create a series of experimental structures such as balloons or inflatable modular platforms that can be inhabited and exploit natural energies. Any of his objects is an invitation to think about alternative knowledge, about emotions and the interaction with others. They invite you to participate, like Poetic Cosmos Of The Breath (pictured above), an experimental solar dome, which was part of The Arts Catalyst’s 2nd International Artists Airshow.
At dawn, crowds formed around a giant and colorful, circular foil, pinned to the ground at the edges with sand bags. Throughout the morning, the artist and his team gradually filled the foil with air and visitors could walk through this stunning colored wonderland.
