Oppenheimer+Depeche Mode+France+Onra
I went to a Minimal Wave show once here in New York, probably one of the more memorable shows i’ve been too because of the dark atmosphere and hidden venue. The girl that djed played some stuff that sounded like Oppenheimer Analysis at times and I recently just found out that they originally came out on Minimal Waves label, well that was a nice coincidence, definitely a great synth pop song.
Policy of Truth.
Anyone ever see Air France LIVE? i’d like to know how they would do a show of their music live? maybe they just DJ? either way if you’re sick of MGMT and need to pull it back a couple notches than try this song No Way Down.
Simple yet to the point, Onra has a nice hold on abstract hip hop world right now with Nosaj Thing, Mux Mool, Hudson Mohawke and Samiyam.

July 28, 2009 at 8:29 pmi like onra, that’s a good track, but i found les chinoiseries a little disappointing overall. 7×7 is nice tho.
i’ve been spending alot of time with paul white lately. he’s a bad, bad man. him and bullion are crushing things on a whole new level in my opinion. i bought the dak album recently as well, another bad dude that’s flippin’ it.
i must say i didn’t like the drift album at all really. his sound is too clean and idm-ish for my liking…it’s too precise and vacuum sealed. hiphop needs to have some dirt and warmth to it. i don’t even get why he’s listed in that group of dudes really.

July 28, 2009 at 9:38 pmI actually dug the chinoiseries quite a bit – I do think it starts to get a bit repetitive 3/4 of the way through with the vocal sample bits… And that dak shits is like… a perfect collage of the shit going on in both LA and Detroit. I really feel like that’s where the renaissance is going down, LA and Detroit right now. NYC hip hop has been up on that hipster party shit for too many years now.
These dudes get all the credit they deserve and I’m a cheerleader all the way, though I think one thing they have in common is that they all sort of jump started their shit with an homage to dilla. I feel like after he passed, all the LA/Brainfeeder + Glasgow dudes and even a bit of the Hobbs dubstep scene crossing its’ way over recently are pretty much taking the torch and running with it. It all exploded post-Dilla. Which is kinda nice since most of his peers are all kind of doing the same tired shit (that Common joint that was supposed to be Kanye’s tribute to dilla was on the wack side).
I also love

July 29, 2009 at 7:12 amles chinoiseries is good but, along with alot of this style of hip hop, the tracks are just too short. works as an album but as a vinyl buyer and geting to play out a bit it just doesnt happen for me. feling the same about ras g etc.

July 30, 2009 at 6:59 amjust get everything by the dude, including his new album. he’s a major talent IMO, and on a personal level, i am TOTALLY into supporting people that a) make great music, and b) are down to earth, cool people that make music strictly for the pleasure and fun of it.
re: barry
i hear you, however i would say that if some of these tracks were longer, they’d be awfully repetitive. one of my mini-gripes with instrumental hiphop/wonk shit is that past the 2minute mark it gets PAINFULLY repetitive. i kinda like little hiphop miniatures. and i like a good groove as much as the next man, but once it gets past that mark i start feeling like, damn, can’t this dude think of anything else to do with this? a good example, to me anyhow, is petestrumentals. i was so excited when i bought that, but was soon dismayed with how little creativity had been put into it past your basic groove.
