Benoit Pioulard+No Age+Kiyo+Ellen Allien

Posted by Jakub

I should just post this whole new Benoit Pioulard record because its just that good. In the song Tower Benoit serenades but most importantly sets the atmosphere in the intro with plenty of details of him shuffling around and then the addicting guitar playing steps in, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, buy it here.

I found another track from the new No Age record that the blog couldn’t be without, its dizzying and noisy with simple additions, hard to not fall in love with it.

I remember when I first heard my first few albums from Schematic records, I couldn’t wrap my head around how long it would have taken to write a song like this one by Kiyo. I imagined many nights slaving over obsession on sequencing and glitching out every minuet speck of sound, I thought my mind would give up if I had to produce this, i’m glad someone stepped up and did it.

I needed to end this post on the upswing, the production on this Ellen Allien track is pretty breathtaking, so bubbly and inviting, each new part that floats in is like a smoke ring fully intact passing by your eyes, beautiful techno will have its day again soon.

B. Baird+LukeAbbott+TwinShadow+Anoraak

I can’t find too much about Bill Baird but this song is a must hear for an ambient head. From front to back this light horn parts floats over the piece, HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

Luke Abbott’s new album starts over off with these amazing little flutters, I had to share.

Twin Shadow redeemed itself after I heard their new album, I love the Don Henley style guitar playing here.

I’m on a Anoraak kick because of his synth work but i’m not feeling these vocals, still a pretty solid listen, I can see alot of people enjoy this.

The Walkmen+Anoraak+Glasser+Hooray!

I’ve always liked how the singer of The Walkmen voice went along with the guitars and their conservative classic style has made it easy for them to be a big hit in the main stream. I listened to the album and thought it was really strong but I found this NPR Session of the song Woe Is Me to be what i’d love to put on if i’m going to listen to The Walkmen.

More Neon Indian remixes, this one comes from Anoraak from France, if you haven’t noticed yet i’m still a sucker for this gentle 80s sound.

Glasser takes a Fever Ray approach, nothing new here but its done really well. At times in this song I wish Ellen Allien took this approach I think by now she’d be doing big things. Also, one part that grabbed me in this Glasser track was the similarities in the intro with Matthew Dear’s Don’t Go This Way, which I loved, more of that sound please.

Hooray! style is all over the place, I can’t put my finger on it, crunchy kicks or sometimes even pianos, in I Guess… he flattens out simple noisy loops making them sound like the last new minutes of a No Age session that has died down.

Games+Lovelock+Surfer Blood+Quantec

Oneohtrix Point Never is at it again, melting our ears with synth leads and nostalgia as Games, its like the best Saturday morning cartoon intro.

Tangerine Dream did wonders for 80’s film scores and musicians, Lovelock follows down that path with this spacey light hearted jam.

Twin Shadow how are you going to just rip one of the most popular guitar loops out of a Police song and have the balls to put your name on it?!

On the road i’ve been listening to a ton of older and newer techy Dub, it makes the mind numbing 10 hour a day drives go by abit less painful.

Bibio + Samiyam + Rustie + Balam Acab

Posted by Jakub

Free spirited Gonjasufi gets reworked by label mate Bibio and its a real unique outcome. Don’t expect the usual guitar or anything worn in sounding, instead organs driving the song into this distorted bass guitar breakdown, it sounds better than I can describe it.

To help promote the upcoming Shigeto debut album Full Circle, Ghostly International is giving away some high profile remixes. The head nod master Samiyam takes Shigeto’s And We Gonna and slaps it around a bit into a low key west coast jam, download it here.

You want a gnarly release to wrap your head around then go out and pick up Rustie’s new EP that came out on Warp today. Its like Sonic the Hedgehog spinning out of control and getting tangled in miles of cassette tape thats being fast forwarded, i’m a fan of this kids creativity, he’s really setting the bar high for how wild this beat music can get and still be super enjoyable.

I keep looking at the name Balam Acab and think its another word just spelled backwards but its not. With the success of Baths I keep running into more beat releases with reverbed lyrics. I really love the use of the water related field recordings in this one, I hope to see this act live.

McGuire+TeenDaze+Toujours+Superpitcher

Emeralds head man Mark McGuire *insert baseball reference here* is on the right track to grabbing up a Best Of 2010 song on my end of the year list. Not only is this song a bubbly lush piece of work but there’s dynamics, it blooms when the distorted guitars hit, I want more.

I have no info on this collab besides posting plenty of Teen Daze on the blog. Part of me hesitates to say this but stripped down there is some Selected Ambient Works or early Ninja Tunes love on the instrumental that makes me smile.

This pulsating haze from Toujours grabbed my ear, very airy and DIY sounding, i’m not too fond of the vox it not gonna kill me listening to it.

The new Superpitcher LP is sublime, i’m posting Moon Fever, its kind of the lone wolf of the bunch but the mood is right, should of debuted on Pop Ambient.

Frank+AliceCohen+Diakari+BrokenRecords

I was just digging in deeper into the Wierd Records[its not spelled Weird, I triple checked] catalog and this song by Frank grabbed me over and over, the guitar line reminds me of some huge 80s hit, is it Dire Straits? no, I don’t know what it is but its buggin’ me, either way its pretty poppy for a cold wave label and thats what makes me keep going back to them.

I wanted to include Alice Cohen in my playlist I did for Olde English Spelling Bee but somehow she slipped thru the cracks, what a great spacey track, the magic here is that she made it so short, it makes you want to play it over and over, smart and talented this Alice girl is.

I’m not going to pretend I know world music, its something I wanted to get into but its a slippery slope, I could end up listening to alot of stuff I don’t want to hear for hours and be disappointed and hate that I spent the time but this song by Diakari Dia Diakite dit Dia almost puts me in a daze. The rhythm keeps me wanting more while his intensity keeps me interested on what the song is about and i’m going to quote Anchorman to end this post: Ron Burgundy: “I’m sorry, I was trying to impress you. I don’t know what it means. I’ll be honest, I don’t think anyone knows what it means anymore. Scholars maintain that the translation was lost hundreds of years ago.”

So maybe some of you want to know what the label 4AD is up to, well the last mailer I got this song by Broken Records, i’m on the fence about it, is it too alternative radio rock for the label? part of it grabs me but a good portion of the song pushes me away and worries about 4AD’s future BUT I trust them so I keep checking back.

No Fear of Missing Out // Process Post

Posted by Alex

Before jumping into this process post I want to define my terms: This project revolves around the concept of ‘FOMO’, which if you haven’t come across, stands for “Fear of Missing Out”. Fomo is a very real and worrysome condition that can affect anyone at anytime. It describes that feeling of jealousy and helplessness when you miss out on something great. Typically the condition becomes more prevalent during the weekends, summer, and nighttime. For example, “When I was looking at John’s pictures from the submarine party last night, I had a really bad case of fomo.” If you are stuck at work right now and your friends just went skydiving, you have fomo.

Nofomo by contrast refers to the state of being in which you have cured your fomo. You do not have a fear of missing out because you are always the one doing something awesome. You actually cause fomo, rather than experience it yourself. If you are living your life to the fullest and saying yes to everything, you have probably achieved such a state.

This is a project about NOFOMO. (And while it may not seem like it, yes this was for school.)
