Musical Spectrum Analysis

Musical Spectrum Analysis is a really interesting take on Spectrograms. Developed by Jon-Kyle Mohr, a designer/programmer/musician and member of the Cargo Collective team, and Lee Martin, a developer at SoundCloud, who built a generative incarnation with Canvas and the SoundCloud API, which can be located at spectrogr.am.

What you are observing above is basically this (as described by Jon-Kyle Mohr):

Sound frequencies are displayed as they are heard. Lower frequencies are mapped low (bottom) to high (top). Brightness is determined by amplitude.

Sweeping tones and rhythmic patterns create intricate structures. The circular form is in memorial of dead formats; the CD, MiniDisc and others. R.I.P.

Andrew Ohlman, who also happens to be a member of the Cargo Collective team, compiled a Quartz sketch which does similar things called Circular Spectrogram.

You can download the Circular Spectrogram application here to create your own visuals (currently only available for Mac users).

San Francisco Carr Apartment

Architect Craig Steely has done an outstanding job renovating this high-rise loft apartment/penthouse. His inspiration came from mood of 70’s space rock and ambient music artists such as Cluster, Brian Eno and Michael Rother. This is really evident in the floor to ceiling ambient light installation on one side of the main living area. The light wall displays videos that are slowed down and each pixel is paired to a 2 inch LED behind the wall. This is what creates the large 8-bit-like pattern. Not only is this light wall really great, but the view is quite possibly one of the best in all of San Francisco. In the pictures after the jump you can see Alcatraz Island and the surrounding bay.

Considering that I’m currently in the process of relocating, it doesn’t help to be looking at such amazing apartments like these—the time will come though.

ISO50 EXCLUSIVE: New Aarnio Mix

Posted by Jakub

I made this semi continuous new Aarnio mix last night of songs that I love to loop and fall asleep to and shared it with a friend. Its a pretty rewarding listen if you enjoy collections of songs in a row that concentrate on depth in tone and calm airy patterns.

Made for people who love the admire the beauty of the ocean at night, listening to trains from a distance and the echos from a large church bell.

A future classic in my mind, this mix by Tensnake for Resident Advisor keeps a pace that feels right for any occasion. If you haven’t followed the highly informative and giving RA site then I suggest you should, decent reviewers but more importantly a great site for these mixes. Marian Bantjes

Posted by Scott

Marian Bantjes is one of those designers whose work I’ve seen often but never put it all together as being from the same artist. Browsing her very deep portfolio you’ll find everything from high school savant ballpoint pen drawings to hyper-maximalist pattern collages. Everything in it is overflowing with passion and Marian’s unwavering reverence for detail is truly something beautiful. Check out her portfolio for more. Also check out Marian’s TED talk (via Leigh)

Via @Nopattern, which is perfect because it’s interesting to note the overlaps between some of their word art.

catalogtree Interview

Posted by Alex

catalogtree is a multidisciplinary design studio based in Amsterdam. Their work is instantly recognizable for its complexity and exceptional clarity; a combination not easily achieved. Their ability to compress large amounts of data into these gorgeous infographics is unparalleled. Joris Maltha and Daniel Gross are the designers behind catalogtree and I had the pleasure to ask them a few questions before I left for Tokyo. Their answers and some example work after the jump.

What were your goals when you initially set up shop?

We never really set up shop and in a way this is our goal. To not have a shop and be amateurs at what we do. Right now we’re working on a 232 meter long radio antenna and are building a crystal radio to receive a local pirate station. We have never done this before and have no idea if this project will succeed.

Vintage Magazine Scans

Posted by Scott

Eric Carl (who also brought us these vintage sci-fi book covers and these classic logos) has a beautifully scanned set of vintage ads from magazines up. They’re all high res so it’s a goldmine for textures and overlays. I love how magazine print breaks up at high resolution. The moire patterns are very useful when blown up in compositions; I use them a lot for posters.
