Bradford Cox of Deerhunter has a great blog for a musician, it might be one of the best if you like humble, talented and informative people. I’m guessing he makes these mixes on the computer because there isn’t much mixing going on but the eclectic tracklist caught my eye even if the mix is a few seasons old.

If I had a car or satellite radio i’d probably follow the radio a little more but I don’t have either really, I do try though to catch Alex Ruder on KEXP whenever I can because of his diverse taste on one of radio’s best commercial-free KEXP(Seattle). Its kind of nice to get thru 30 brand new songs within less than 70 mins and a get a little info along the way, definitely worth checking out.

Usually every Monday morning I head over to Resident Advisor to check out what weekly dj mix is up. My all time favorite mix on there is this Mark E mix, It was the 112th one up, I think they’re in the 140’s now . This one really kicks off at the 11:30 minute mark and its literally smooth sailing and slow head nodding in your chair(if you’re working and listening) from there on. Some of the highlight tracks are the LTJ Experience and the Marvin Gaye edits but once you get into the meat and potatoes of it I personally lose it, its like watching saltwater taffy, milk chocolate, and crayons being made in front of you on repeat all at the same time, its just this perfect slow tempo and you end up losing track of time.
TRACKLIST STL – Foggy Beats – Something Amp Fiddler – You – Genuine Try to find me VOL 1 – Make Dance – Golf Channel Cole Medina – Love You Inside Out (Pinches Mix) – House Arrest Mark E – Untitled – Unreleased Grace Jones – La Vie En Rose (Mark E edit) – Unreleased Bogdan Irkuk – Carpice – Rollerboys Recordings Rondenion – Precious Time – Parker Music Works Mark E – Get Yourself Together – Unreleased LTJ Experience – I Love You – Irma Marvin Gaye – Heavy Love Affair (The Revenge Rework) – Unreleased Birth Control – Plastic People (Medit) – Unreleased
I haven’t done a mix since 2005’s Pink Rest At Low Levels which you can download here, its an ambient/IDM mix of my favorite music I’d listened to when I would fool around in Adobe Illustrator. This new mix called Goodnight Gracie is kind of an ode to a weekly I did for 3+ years with Matthew Dear, Ryan Elliott, and Scott Brandon at a lounge called Goodnight Gracie in Ann Arbor. Ryan Elliott and Matthew Dear now are big international DJ’s and Scott and I took the night over once they started touring. Ryan would let me open nearly every night and play ambient and deep melodic house before they went on so I could hear Broker/Dealer on decent speakers, I hope you can at least enjoy the end.

I know very little about Sebastian B. besides the fact that he has a great record collection, when I visited Cincinnati last summer and ran into the super kind guy that was full of knowledge about his vinyl I realized he was pretty old school about things, I don’t even think he has a myspace which is pretty unbelievable to me in 2009 but also a nice change of pace. The tracks he picks in this mix range from 1981 to now, I really adore the ending few songs but one thing I learned about mixes recently from Michna who put out a mixtape on cassette this year is that they’re not made to be skipped around on to find what you want, you just have to trust the DJ that put it together to give you an hour of fresh and enjoyable songs.

Recently I got sit in on a recording of Tim Sweeney’s Beats in Space radio show on NYU Radio. The wonderful part about it is that he plays so many unreleased promos so you’ll always get to hear something new if you tune in and he does it weekly. I hope to feature a few more sets off his site in the future since this one was pretty amazing and now i’m trying to catch up on some of the archives.

Berlin-based Alan Abrahams has earned a lot of attention lately. His albums as Portable for the Background and ~scape imprints have garnered near-universal acclaim for their deft fusion of tribal rhythms and a modern micro-house sensibility. For his first LP as Bodycode, The Conservation of Electric Charge, Abrahams focuses on the more dancefloor-oriented aspects of his style, yielding a gorgeous album born from the belief that the psyche can be unlocked via the body. Bodycode also came from necessity ? while on tour playing club dates, Abrahams was compelled to seek the most engaging sound for that environment. Remarkably adept at its task, Bodycode?s mesmerizing percussive arrangements and subtle melodic flourishes create an immediately engaging sound that lingers in the mind long after the club has closed.
I just saw Alan aka Portable/Bodycode play last night on a freezing rooftop outdoors right around Union Square in New York and he blew my mind. Alan makes pure body music that’s straight from his roots of South Africa, if anyone is doing any tribal house music properly its him. He also slowly falls into some beautiful droned out breakdowns that aren’t like anything else, so there is something here for the world music(sadly this genre has such a bad rep) and ambient fans as well.
Eliot Lipp’s 2009 has been one of the more productive one’s out there, having released his new album Peace Love Weed 3D and organizing a 40+ date tour you wouldn’t think he’d have the time to head into the studio to record a live studio session. The mix features some of the more talked about names in Electronic/Hip Hop right now like Mux Mool, Nosaj Thing, Black Milk, and Michna. Some of the highlights in my opinion are Beamrider which is a live set favorite of mine and the ever so popular recent Warp track Overnight.
