Dieter Rams Braun ebay haul
If you’re a Dieter Rams fan and happen to have €350,000 that you are itching to spend, then look no further than here.
Because six SK4’s (and 994 other Braun items) are better than one.

Some great shots from inside the home of industrial design icon Dieter Rams. It’s nice to know that those museum shots of Braun products I always see are actually in use somewhere. There’s also this house full of Rams-designed Vistsoe shelving.

When Dieter Ram’s was 28 he designed the 606 Universal Shelving System aka the 60’s 606. Today Vitsoe a furniture design company that has a shop in Manhattan is celebrating this remarkable shelving by hosting Dieter at their shop today. If you get a chance please stop there is a special treat in which the front half of the shop is set up entirely with vintage systems from the 60’s, on loan from Dietrich Lubs(Dieter Rams colleague) himself.

I am very jealous of any of our readers that are able to make it to this event. Starting May 22, the Less is More exhibit will be at the Museum für Angewandte Kunst in Frankfurt, Germany. The exhibit surveys Dieter Rams entire body of work and is also accompanied by a lecture series. I’m hoping this Vitsoe sponsored roving exhibit will eventually make its way to California. Though the last time I wanted to visit a design museum, I had to all the way to Milan.
If you can’t make it to the event, do remember the 800 page catalog I posted on not long ago. This book is terrific. If you haven’t picked up a copy yet, they are available from Vitsoe and Amazon.
Mid-Century Modernist posted a couple interviews with Dieter Rams. One is by Gestalten and the other by The Design Museum. It’s great to see this pioneer of product design is still getting the recognition he deserves.
By the way, can you believe this guy is still around? He’s the true definition of a living legend. That’s one of the coolest things about graphic design, our heroes don’t overdose on heroin at 27. They seem to live long, healthy lives, maintaining productivity well into later life. Must be all the sitting, or maybe all the designer reading glasses.
“Weniger, aber besser”
Plastolux posted up these wonderful shots by Matthew Donaldson of various Dieter Rams artifacts in their natural habitats. Unfortunately though, if placed in my house — being the cluttered mess that it is — most of these poor creatures would wither and die in a matter of days. There just aren’t enough clean lines and pristine spaces to support their minimalist German sensibilities. Someday… Although seriously, can anyone get anything done in an environment like this? I’d love to see Jonathan Ive’s work space, I would bet it doesn’t exactly mirror his design aesthetics.
Some more perfection from Dieter Rams via his very own flickr pool.
Some vintage Braun goodness from the Dieter Rams Flickr Pool. Rams was the head of design at Braun A.G. during the heyday of industrial design. I think his philosophy is one we can all look to for inspiration:
Rams once explained his design approach in the phrase "Weniger, aber besser" which freely translates as "Less, but better." – Wikipedia
