Dubstep Essential Mix by Guardian

Posted by Jakub 07/10/09

Guardian
Dubstep has been manhandling the electronic scene lately in the States and i’m sure in the UK its even more intense than that and has been for quite sometime now. I think its finally spreading into the “normal” listeners ears, I say it that way so I don’t get too much crap from the true dubstep heads that have been following dubstep since the 90′s or whatnot. Guardian also known as A Setting Sun did a nice job of with this mix by showing the range of how dark to poppy the sound gets plus really capturing a few of my personal favorites.

Guardian’s dubstep manifestations are absolute fire…looks like his set last night went over real well too! Leave it to Jay to be the forerunner of Moodgadget’s label-wide infatuation with dubstep, I can’t wait to see him at Forth From Its Hinges in Ann Arbor later this month!

Yea I’ve noticed that we had a bunch of dubstep nights spring up here also. From what I’ve been told one or two of em get pretty packed out.

Another thing to bring up is the big debate about dubstep. There has been alot of debate/discussion on if its killing other scenes. By killing people talk about producers associated with certain music styles, jumping ship to the popular dubstep train. Also people like to bring up how people don’t really “dance” at dubstep nights, but just kinda nod along. Which from various perspectives can be rather boring if strung out for a whole night.

Personally I like the stuff from hyperdub for driving at night or playing around the house doing things. Then if I’m at a club, rave, party I like hearing the brutal, violent stuff from labels like peaceoff, adnoism etc..

btw has kode9′s book came out yet?

I’m surprised to hear that dubstep is getting big in the states. It has spread from the UK to other european countries, like Denmark, some time ago. People are getting into the whole UK scene, and I’m looking forward to hearing some more grime inspired american hiphop, for an example.
As you probably all know, dubstep and grime both have roots in the D’n'B scene, and i must say.. The basslines – omg – i love that crazy filter-stuff.
Even though it can get a bit tedious at times, as it sounds like everyone is using Reason for programming their basslines. But it still rocks my world. :)

And at last: Great mix! Is it all american artists, or…?

Talking about basslines like this:

Even though this is really great, and the video is hilarious! There’s stil that Reason sound to it.

@stigC

The mix is mostly UK producers from what I recognize, but there are some US producers thrown in for good measure.

The first artist on the mix Ramadanman is DJing here soon…or just has, not positive.

As for some of the basslines sounding the same, yea some people are lazy and just throw an LFO on a sine wave and call it a day. I like the people who can layer up bassline sounds to create some sorta sonic wall of bass/sound and not rely on the “wobble” bass. I think Vex’d are a good example of doing things nicely with bass sounds.

For a good example of the more “heavier” or “breakstep” stuff I enjoy, download this free mix from one of my favorite labels peaceoff. Also has some nice scratching, juggles and turntablism thrown in for good measure.

Also people might enjoy this – live drum’n'bass band – literally a drummer and a bass player and two djs.
The thing is – the drummer is a friend of mine – they’ve studied drum’n'bass from the very first vinyl records, and really tried to get the whole d’n'b and dubstep thing down, but played live. Not compared to some drummers who see it as a techincal excercise. These guys live and breathe it and have been working on this for many years.

Well, I hope you’ll enjoy this as well.
