Tom Eckersley

Posted by Jon

Tom Eckersley (1914-1997) was an English poster artist known for his use of bold, bright colors and simple block shapes. During WWII he was a cartographer for the Royal Air Force and created designs for the General Post Office. In 1947, Art and Industry magazine described his approach to design as scrapping the “non-essential, by the perfect mating of chosen word with chosen picture, he wings the total message.” A year later he was awarded the Order of the British Empire for his services to poster design.

The Visual Arts Data Service has a great collection of his work.

Teeel + Tropics + Games + Blouse

Posted by Jakub

Teeel’s Amulet debut album was released earlier this year featuring hints of synth pop and italo mixed together. Tomorrow remixes from Starfawn, Slow Hands, and many others get released into the digital world, I highly recommend grabbing this Datassette remix for FREE, here.

Now more on a moodier tip, Tropics put together this dream beat emo anthem that stretches out and reminds us how pretty this lo-fi sound can get.

Games is back, synth funk jazz radio is oozing out of this one, tons of soul in this edit.

Don’t let the tape speed correction intro throw you off on this debut from Blouse, this lush new wave might be something you might want to keep digging for.

John Jay of Wieden Kennedy + Creativity

John Jay of Wieden + Kennedy was recently named one of the most creative business people in 2011 by Fast Company. His position as W+K’s executive creative director takes him between all of the W+K offices in an effort to breed those cultures into the main headquarters in Portland.

In this video John Jay talks about his creative process. He takes a step back and approaches his interpretation of process from a wise view. What I’ve drawn mostly from this is that it’s about conversation. Most importantly it’s about listening to what people have to say and then taking that to make it relative and understandable to other people.

The last thing that I’ve drawn from this that I agree with is that you should always place yourself around people that you aspire to be. It’s really about surrounding yourself with positive energy. It sounds cheesy but it makes a world of difference.

The greatest thing we can offer is to be great listeners.

XenoOaklander+Obin+ActiveChild+J.Muller

I have never passed up a Xeno & Oaklander show, their presence on stage might be too cold and minimalistic for some(which kind of makes me glad) but the care and dedication to a specific sound puts them into a breed of their own.

André Obin drove up from Boston to play in Manhattan a few nights back so I went with my sister. His live set sits in this spot where you feel like he could take the place of Underworld or Justus Köhncke as a huge EU festival act but all the lights and fireworks are stripped away and he’s just there with his gear and you feel like your at this personal show in his room, really nice full arpeggios, intimate breakdowns and far from trendy.

Adult Swim has done it again and put together a quality compilation, this time by releasing a track at a time of popular acts like Best Coast, How To Dress Well, etc to kick it off. Fader today leaked the Active Child song which i’ve been waiting for, the video is below.

So I read on Altered Zone today about Jürgen Müller which is a musician that only pressed a few copies of his album about 30+ years ago and handed them out to friends during a time that he was on the seas working. Funny enough this music is dreamy and people are really into it right now and more importantly I hope we find more music like this.

Oil paintings by Jonathan Zowada. Somewhat reminiscent of Thomas Scholes and Roger Dean stuff. Loving the gallery placards too.

An exhibition of large scale drawings and oil paintings at Prism Gallery, Los Angeles from December 16, 2010 – February 28, 2011. The landscape topographies were derived from graph data (displayed as printed mirrors on accompanying plinths), modeled in 3D and then oil paintings created from those 3D renders. For more information, visit the Prism website.
