I’m almost certain that everything Bradford Cox from Deerhunter does turns to gold, the guy is so kind and unreal, even on Vox Celeste 5 which sounds like such a simple song laid out but his tweaks and additions are what set him apart from the rest of the pack of rock bands out there.
I’m sure many of you remember a label called Eastern Developments, it was run by Prefuse 73 and they put out a lot of talent like Eliot Lipp, Daedelus, etc. back in 2003 and 2004. One album that I still listen to today is Instrmntl by Dabrye, the song “Won” is my go to, that clap with that low muted synth bass always gets my head nodding.
I ran into David Byrne this weekend at Warp’s 20 year anniversary during the Battles show, he might be the best dancer in New York no joke. I pretty much stood there for about 10 minutes until my friend Danny was like “just standing next to David Byrne, no big deal.” Man! you really got to hand it to him he’s a musical genius, all that I spit out to him was “The Catherine Wheel soundtrack might be the best musical piece of work ever made, will you take a picture with me?”
I’m always on the hunt for new or old Dubstep, when I first heard Skream I wasn’t a fan but I must of heard the wrong songs because he’s throwing down some of the best elements I love in dubstep on Rutten, i’m even down with that flute right now.
We all have our dance mixes from friends stacked to our ceilings so instead of posting a mix of music to listen to while your getting ready to go out tonight I have dug up this mix by a good friend named Rob Theakston that made a mix for people to listen to for the morning after the rowdiness or New Year’s day. The beginning of Lee Ritenour’s “Is It You” is pure gold, definitely worth letting that song ride out. I’m sure i’ll be playing this tomorrow morning after tonight’s Warp 20 year party that i’m heading to now.
“Made this mix the other night, just a bunch of yachtness to help you get back into the swing of life…” – Rob Theakston
TRACKLIST Bobby Caldwell – Down For The Third Time (Clouds, 1978) Steely Dan – Black Cow (MCA, 1977) The Crusaders– Marcella’s Dream (MCA, 1980) Lee Ritenour– Is It You (Discovery, 1981) Larsen Feiten Band– Over (Warner Bros, 1980) Greg Phillinganes– Lazy Nina (Planet, 1985) David Sanborn – Let’s Just Say Goodbye (Warner Bros, 1980) Rickie Lee Jones – Night Train (Warner Bros, 1979)
The backing rhythms remind me of listening to early Kompakt out of a hand radio while being completely occupied with blowing a 100 dandelion tails out a car window with the members of the Cocteau Twins. After hearing this album by A Sunny Day in Glasgow I might have to say they maybe the torchbearers of softy dream pop in 2009 and I have no problems with that. After hearing a few songs I was thinking this could be what Stereolab would sound like if it was reborn and cared for by Slowdive and a giant gentle shoegaze educated moth that flew the band members around and cultured them with magical sound like Falcor from Neverending Story? Could I name drop anymore band names in this post? no one will ever know unless a band member from A Sunny Day in Glasgow approves this post.
Please note: that the photo of the Dandelion Tails is by John Corney, perfect name for the perfect picture.

I need to credit Scott for finding Neon Indian, I almost wrote it off because the name but one quick listen and I was hooked. The synths have this nice in and out sound and his singing stays in the perfect range, overall just a catchy experimental pop song, I hope to hear more from him.
I remember that Shades Of Jae was my first taste of actually obsessively seeking out a record, a friend of mine had doubles but didn’t want to part with either. The song is such a tease, it feels like its going to start up like 10 times but just goes back into the groove that doesn’t have a kick which really separates the house lovers and the fakers on a dance floor.
Disco tracks on Kompakt in the early 2000s? yes and it was a go to record if you had to DJ to a stiff crowd. If I didn’t have Muria by Metro Area or 2 after 909 some nights would get really long, these 2 always loosened everyone up with that huge swaying synth and warmed up Kraftwerk like sounding machines calculating.
One of the first songs I ever heard by The Field was A Paw In My Face and its still one of the best. Held together by a looping stutter of a Lionel Richie song and some octave changes I never know when you would turn it off because i’m such a fan of repetition, i’m going on 3 times in a row and I still want more.
Just saw some retweets of this Flying Lotus video i’ve never seen for Infinitum, enjoy.
I heard Washed Out on the Gorilla vs Bear blog awhile back and have been hunting down tracks ever since. He has the same draw that Panda Bear, Lone, and Bullion had to my ear when I first hear them. I think this song is soo good and different that it might be a new way to figure out if I can be friends with a person solely based on just playing them this song and their reaction, I kid I kid i’d never set up that kind of system to find new friends, who does such a thing.
Lusine and Cassette’s Wont Listen’s remix of Christine both came out today, i’ve been waiting for this Lusine song to come out so I could share it with you all. Cirrus builds like a growing smokey fire, very thick and quickly spreads out over the spectrum of sound while Cool Your Shoes reminds of alumni Ghostly electronic indie rockers Midwest Product with its fast pace synths and movie soundtrack breakdowns.
Michna and I have been djing weekly at Brooklyn Bowl in New York which is a beautiful venue, most of the music I play is stuff that is popular in the mainstream world but once in a while Michna or I get to throw in something we really love, last week I heard Michna play this Hot Chip remix of Gorillaz which sounded soo good on their system, the song picks up nicely and switches thru all different kinds of genres.

Lo-fi rock is coming strong recently, how long will it hold its place as the spotlight in the young hearts of vinyl loving rockers? well with acts like these i’m hoping forever. My true and very fresh caring for music like this is definitely Ducktails, met him twice this weekend and he was such a nice guy he reminded me of people in the U.P. in Michigan like the U.S. backwoods version of UK’s Bibio but maybe spends alil more time in the garage playing with pedals. I didn’t get to see him perform as Ducktails but he does a good amount of the music in Real Estate who I saw perform at Insound’s 10 yr. anniversary at Brooklyn Bowl with The Drums. Landrunner is very loopy just the way I like it, so honest and uncorrupted by much that is going on right now in indie rock.
Beach FossilsDaydream gets me thinking about how much simpler live could be, the gentle hooky guitar work meets guys that seem to have have it easy. I picture it being made by guys that don’t have many problems and their youth summers we’re or still are filled with trips to cabins, a ton a waterskiing or tubing, and just relaxing in the tall grass by some sand dunes. It’s a nice visual to have when you live on a cement island, makes me want to plan vacations better.
Tallahassee’s Holiday Shores comes to me by Brooklyn’s Twosyllable Records, the label that also put out New Villager’s 7 inch vinyl earlier this year that I love. Holiday Shores has a bit more pep in its step compared to the other songs but still in same vein, alot of catchy vocals and the drumming in a few of their songs accompanied by keys has some real unique parts that make me keep coming back and listening.
Tom Croose our semi resident DJ here on the ISO50 blog turned me onto Real Estate, he told me he loved the “guitar noodling” and the lyrics “Budweiser Sprite, Do you feel alright?”, to me its laid back feel makes me want to bust out the Yo La Tengo’s Summer Sun LP but i’m too busy chillin’ in my kids pool filled with hose water that is being warmed by the sun and I have grass blades stuck all over me that i’m trying to pick off, so lets just keep the Real Estate CD in.
If I could ask for more of something right now in the music industry it would be another song like Think Twice by The Detroit Experiment, i’m not talking about another Carl Craig group to come out which is already happening and its called TRIBE or a Mark E edit of this song which is great by the way but just another band that can sound as good as this song does.
The most off the wall song that i’ve heard this summer has to be this song by Siriusmo which was played to me by someone that only listens to post rock/noise in his bedroom saying its like nothing else and described it over the phone as bangin’ like Audion, trendy like the Ed Banger stuff but with a unique angle, children vocals and some kind of cartoonish caribbean intro, very addicted in a good/weird way like pickled turnips.
Went to a bar a few weeks ago and you know right when I walked in with friends it was all girls which is never a bad thing but I realized I had no chance after awhile because it was a ladies night and pretty much no boys allowed. No biggie I just hung out and noticed the DJ was killin’ it right when this song came on, the cowbell is pretty much yelling at you to get on the dancefloor and the guitar is saying find a spot deep in the crowd and sweat it out, not bad if you love cowbells, I mean loooooooove cowbells.
Correct me if i’m wrong but is Loefah a legend in the dubstep world? I love his style of how he times his releases on the sounds and it always being very striped down, sometimes I feel like i’m left hanging but the low end makes up for that.
I usually post music that is easy on the ears and in my opinion will start your Monday morning off gently or some kind of pre festivities at home mix to listen to on a Friday right before you get the real deal at some venue with entertainment. Well its Wednesday and all I need is the strength to get me thru the weekday and Mogi Grumbles is all about getting us thru that by bangin’ out what he does best which is sharing his favorite disco french house songs. My favorite part about this mix is its a collection of songs that are classics that might catch anyone’s ear but a few surprises as well that come from a lot of crate digging since Mogi works at record store in Ann Arbor. Highlight track for me is Lifelike – Discomachine, reminds me of what Beamer would listen to on the way to the new Tron Legacy film screening.
