Layer Tennis Tomorrow
I’ll be participating in my second Layer Tennis match tomorrow, Friday, Feb. 6th (here is an archive of my first match). For the uninitiated, Layer Tennis is a live event where two designers volley a .PSD file back and forth, adding to the image each time and playing off their opponents work. All of this is commentated in real time by the event organizers — Coudal Partners — at the Layer Tennis site. This will be the season opener so the format will be a bit different. They’re calling it “Around The World” and this time there are ten players who each play in succession, based on their global location. Here is the list of players with serve times (Chicago — where Coudal is based — time in parentheses):
Layer Tennis – Around The World – Friday, Feb. 6th, 2009
Scott Hansen – Noon in San Francisco (2:00 CST)
Armin Vit – 3:15p in New York (2:15 CST)
Evan Melnyk – 3:30p in Montreal (2:30 CST)
Tom Muller – 8:45p in London (2:45 CST)
Adriana de Barros – 9:00p in Lisbon (3:00 CST)
David Rondel Cambou + Nathalie Melato – 10:15p in Paris (3:15 CST)
Armin Osmancevic + Werk – 10:30p in Stockholm (3:30 CST)
Briana Bolger – 11:45p in Kiev (3:45 CST)
Jose Illenberger – 6am Saturday in Manila (4:00 CST)
Fanny Khoo + Tom Merckx – 6:15a Saturday in Singapore (4:15 CST)
You can catch all the action live at the Layer Tennis site.

February 5, 2009 at 12:41 pmCool, look forward to seeing how that goes. Layer Tennis always was and is such an interesting concept. I remember searching your site once a while ago and found that your participated in Layer Tennis, which I didn’t even know you took part in. I think it was before I read this blog regularly.
I dunno about Coudal Partners site though, it’s neat looking but I find it so damn confusing, especially the Layer Tennis area. I mean, is there ever a definitive winner? I still don’t know, there’s commentary but it seems it doesn’t come to a conclusion and that annoys the hell outta me. One or twice it’s been inferred, but still not sure. More headings would help too. Vertical rhythm on that site needs work.
Sometimes I also don’t get Layer Tennis, I think especially on your previous bout, certain volleys use so little if at all any elements — maybe like one — from the previous guys volley and isn’t that the point? Perhaps it was just the fact that you were in survival mode ;P
All the best with it dude, hope you crush it. Great to see Tom Muller in the line up as well, love his website, I’ll be watching out for that one if it’s the same guy.

February 5, 2009 at 1:07 pmSo how does it work. Is the first volley something you prepare ahead of time? Do you just keep a bunch of prepared elements open to use? For example on this one, http://layertennis.com/071109/04.php no way did he draw and color those shapes in 15 minutes!

February 5, 2009 at 1:36 pmAs for as I can recall, the rules of Layer Tennis state:
1) The first volley can be prepared 1 day in advance
2) No volleys can be ready made (apart from the first, obviously)
3) Anything can be used in the volley, including things prepared earlier

February 5, 2009 at 1:46 pmSo you got the first volley. Is this a good thing? All designs will essentially be based off of your initial design, unless someone takes Cordiner’s approach of covering up whatever the last volley produced. Or is the blank slate too much to handle?

February 5, 2009 at 2:10 pmyeah, the whole thing is pretty loose…. I mean, of course you have anything you’ve ever done sitting around on your computer, but I guess the idea is to riff on what others are doing so only if what you have can continue the “story” or whatever is going on. in the case of my first match, yes, it got a bit convoluted and went off track. but I guess that’s the fun of it, it’s all spontaneous. this one should be a bit different just because you only get one shot then it moves out of your hands.

February 5, 2009 at 2:25 pmGreat. I remember it was a lot of fun to watch the first Layer Tennis that you were in. This second one is bound to be just as entertaining. Note for iCal coming up!

February 5, 2009 at 2:41 pmNever heard of this, but loved the idea. I´ll try to catch this up, it should be a lot of fun.
And on a random note: just saw a TV spot for Unilever that featured Tycho´s “The Daydream” as a background. Found that interesting.

February 5, 2009 at 5:33 pmThat sounds very interesting, designers from various locations, cultures and styles all working on the same piece.
Are they are for sale when finished? Or perhaps prints of them?

they always post the whole match in the archive, so you can see everything.

it’s all done @ 72dpi so not likely a print would come out very well.
