November 29, 2010 at 8:40 amHmmmm. Favorite post of the past year. I would have to say the “Tycho Album Progress” post was my favorite of all, for a few reasons.
First of all, the photos were crazy inspirational…seeing the process of electronic music being made in such a tangible, tactile way made a huge impact on me.
Second, the honesty of the prose was excellent. So many artists are like, “I’m the G.O.A.T., follow me, get up on my level” with their whack _ss youtube videos and whatnot, but here is a dude making hot jawns (excuse the Philly slang) but who is crazy humble about the anxiety of creating an organized body of work and the struggle with the process. Loved it.
Third, the photos again…your studio is the ish.
There were a lot of other great posts…the ‘creative block’ post, the nofomo post and a few others that were very good, but this one is my favorite.
Peace + Respect,
JC

November 29, 2010 at 8:42 amOne of my favorites was undoubtedly Dark Side of the Lens, definitely an inspiration to an aspiring videographer.
And any of the posts about architecture (I can’t tell you how many times I’ve stared at the photos of that house in the Alps, and then spent hours perusing various architecture firm websites… while I’m out in LA in the spring, I plan on pitching an idea about a show that focuses on similar architecture to HGTV, Travel, Discovery, and a few other networks / production companies).

Love it – Can’t get enough of it

November 29, 2010 at 9:27 amEvery year is always ripe with great posts, this year was no exception – I loved the Overcoming Creative Block, Tycho Album Progress, etc. – but I must say that my favorite post was the announcement of the Tycho show in NYC this past September. I still have that soundboard-audience matrix tape of the show, I’ll have to get you the raw version while I continue playing with it!

Dave says:
November 29, 2010 at 10:02 amThe playlists are always great posts, but I would have to say the Burning Man post was the most memorable to me. Until I saw those photos, I always kinda scoffed at the whole Burning Man schtick like I’d scoff at a Widespread Panic 15 minute guitar solo. Your photos from that set totally changed my perspective and painted a much different picture for me. If that ain’t art, I don’t know what is. Thanks.

November 29, 2010 at 1:14 pmWell choosing a single post might be difficult, but Shigeto’s Full Cirle album was amazing. I’m tied between that and the Matthias Heiderich posts.
And stumbling across phantogram was a highlight of my year.
But I think I’ll say Matthias Heiderich. As a student I’ve just started photography recently, and his work has given me plenty of inspiration.

I became fascinated by picodwelling after I read this post. There is something really quite unique and satisfying in my opinion of simplifying one’s life to only have what is really needed, without duplicating items. Steve Sauer’s philosophy of having no wasted space and everything accessible/funcitonal is brilliant. Sauer’s http://www.oixio.com/pico-dwelling/ is also a great website to check out. Thanks for posting!

November 29, 2010 at 3:15 pmMy favorite post this year has to be the Atari Computer Concepts. As an industrial design student, its always amazing to see concepts done by hand. Sadly, our industry of I.D. is becoming more and more dependent on computer renderings and less on the craft and beauty of a hand render. We all can still sketch well, but past that, people jump to photoshop or rendering models in keyshot. It’s like a breath of fresh air to see the vintage Atari work, as well as the many posts here every day.

ARMADA is an amazing company all the way down to it’s roots, by starting the company because the bigger players in the ski industry wouldn’t let ski designers make skis that were built to ride by guys who spend most of their time on the slopes. They only wanted to design skis that would appeal to your average Joe who only spends two weeks of the year skiing. Plus they have always valued a good design aesthetic! I seriously hope I win!

November 29, 2010 at 5:36 pmAlex’s Dark side of the lens post. I loved the video, read about it, posted it to a few friends, and it turns out I know Micky (the guy who shot it – a friend of a friend who i met last summer) and he’s now agreed to shoot a video for my band’s next release.
Plus, there’s a shot of the derelict pub round the corner from my parents house where my dad used to be a regular. Which was a lovely surprise to see seeing as most of the video is shot in cornwall, whereas my parents live in Manchester, around 500 miles away and definitely no where near the coast.
This post was a revelation to me and without reading this blog I may never have seen it.

November 29, 2010 at 5:36 pmFor me, the GAP logo redesign project turned out to be really interesting. As I still didn’t start my studies in art (studying in science but planning on going in infographics or publicity at university), it got me to realize how logos of big trademarks were stamped in my subconscious as most entries just felt wrong to me by not being the original logo.
Of course, the playlists are also one thing I can’t wait for to come out!

November 29, 2010 at 7:15 pmI would have to say the post that I would pick would be the post about Neil Krug, however I am a bit biased since he did do a show at the gallery here this past September….. Aside from that and the simple fact that I dig all of the posts on here, the other one that really stands out in my mind was the post about the Ford GTO, WOW what an amazing car.

December 6, 2010 at 12:46 pmLove all the posts about vintage advertising (porsche, synthesizers, swissair posters, etc)… so great to see what people did before the advent of computer design and world-at-you-fingertips/Google Search type of mentality was so prevalent. That was a time when The Concept still reigned at the head of the creative table and there was enough time actually given to the design process to make interesting, provoking decisions. Now it’s all about cranking work out as fast as possible and, oh, by the way, try to make it look cool/amazing while you’re at it…

December 6, 2010 at 3:40 pmI’d have to say I’ve been so thrilled with most posts but as a designer who was influenced so heavily from skateboard art (esp Alva) and a landscape photographer so influenced by the ocean and its many ‘moods’ its a tough choice between ‘Darkside of the Lens ‘ and the ‘Skateboard art’ posts…

December 19, 2010 at 12:03 amMy favorite post of the year is tied between the 1975 IBM Slides and the Prefab Office Pod posts. I’m a diehard Thinkpad user for several years now, and I really love the quality brand IBM created. Would have loved to find those slides in wallpaper resolution, too.
The Prefab Office was very inspiring to someone whose home office is cluttered and not the most focused workspace. The idea of a home office physically AND mentally separate from the rest of the house is a wonderful dream–or food for a DIY project.
Chris says:
December 19, 2010 at 12:14 amWhoops, just realized the IBM slides were from several years back! I don’t know why I had them stuck in my head as something recent.

January 11, 2011 at 2:27 amI’d have to say the making of Designspiration was my favorite post of the year, not because it was a particularly awe inspiring post itself, but because the site it opened me up to is awe inspiring.
As far as more traditional posts go it’s really hard to not pick a large handful of posts, but two stand out: The Dark Side of The Lens, as many have stated, and the largely overlooked Mads Berg Illustration post. Something about his style has really stuck with me for whatever reason; it’s a perfect blend of mathematical precision, whimsical visuals, and straight up class.
