June 25, 2013 at 1:30 pmI don’t know where to begin. First, I applaud you for your viison, your bravery, and your enthusiasm. For the first time in my life (I am 50+), I wish I were an engineer so I could participate in this wonderful adventure. I grew up with Star Trek and I think the Enterprise and space exploration are in my DNA. I absolutely totally 100% (at the risk of being redundant) grok your viison!I don’t need shares. Just set up the donation account and I will pop in a few dollars. A few dollars from a billion folks on Earth will add up to a startup fund. A lot of people share your viison; we need a way to pool resources. Or, how about asking multi-billionaires to chip in with a billion each? And there is no need to disclose your identity at this moment. It will only generate discussion that will distract people from the real task at hand. Some people were born to be roadblocks to progress, so let’s keep them at bay.You have started a meaningful dialog and I agree with your approach on many things, especially the argument that not just any spaceship will fire up our imagination. We need the Enterprise!I hope you get lots of meaningful responses from people who are STEM-qualified to discuss this project. I may not live long enough to see the Enterprise NCC-1700 fly, but I want to see it being built. And I agree wholeheartedly with the poster who suggested making this an international effort. And why not? Star Trek cuts across border, gender, and age lines. And regarding funding, it really is not much if put in proper perspective, as you have.May space exploration live long and prosper, in your revised approach, and not in the one-way delivery vehicle model that you argue against. Small-minded people dream little or none at all. History only records implementations of large scale dreams. The best aspect of your dream is that we can actually make it a reality! That’s what is shocking about it.I could keep on writing, I am so excited. But I would only be mostly echoing what you and thoughtful posters have written. So, all you STEM-experts out there, let’s see you shrug off your constraints and participate in a project that will literally and figuratively take humankind a long long way.
