Vacation!
So a couple of months ago I realized that I haven’t really been on a real vacation in my entire adult life. Sure, I went on that trip with my brother a couple years back, but there was a fair amount of business mixed in there and the rest of the time it was more about seeing and doing everything we could and less about relaxing. My neighbors got married in Tulum, Mexico a couple years ago and all of the stories and pictures they came back with made the place seem amazing. Fast forward to a couple months ago and throw pig flu into the mix and you have a cheap, awesome vacation in a tropical paradise. We’re flying into Cancun then driving down to Playa Del Carmen for the first few nights and then it’s on to Tulum. Staying at this awesome hotel called “Basico”. Looks very well designed.
In keeping with the vacation spirit I have decided not to bring my laptop or the big camera. I know I will regret this at some point, but sometimes you need a break from everything and with those two things anywhere near me I just start thinking about work. I will be bringing my little Canon Elf which can take HD video and does a surprising job at still photos for how small it is. Besides, it’s a pretty good feeling knowing I’m going to be leaving tomorrow morning for a week and everything I need will fit in a carry-on shoulder bag. I think that fact alone is enough to make up for leaving the D80 behind.
So I’ll be leaving the blog posting in Jakub and Alex’s capable hands for the next week. I will have my iPhone so I’ll probably post some stuff up to Twitter now and then. And hopefully the site itself doesn’t completely implode — if you didn’t notice today (what timing!) we had a lot of server issues which seem to have been resolved for the time being. Anyways, see you all in a week, time to disconnect from the matrix for a while…

July 29, 2009 at 7:14 amthat hotel looks amazing. anyone find it funny how its appeal is coming directly from the design of it sight and the way the photos are shot? obviously not that funny considering this is a design blog but couldnt it turn out to be a crappy hotel but you’d still love it?

July 29, 2009 at 7:39 amWow a real vacation unplugged. It seems like such a novel idea. When you get back I wanna see some of those posters from the epson up for sale.
Enjoy the Guacamole!

July 29, 2009 at 8:10 amYou’re gonna have a blast, man. Tulum rocks.
If you have time you should book a tour to chichen itza too. It’s a few hours on a bus but well worth it. Also, Xel-Ha and Xcaret parks are fun – you get to ride waverunners through water caves in the jungle and all sorts of other wicked shit.
Here’s to passing out in the sun after too many Patron’s and Margeritas!
— PS Don’t drink the water.

July 29, 2009 at 8:12 amas long as you have a little camera and an iphone.. you can plunk out ideas rather like an electronic note pad. :) Definitely make sure it all fits in one carry on bag.. my sister went to Talum for her honeymoon and the airline lost the luggage, never did get it back.
Have fun. Relax. Don’t drink the water but definitely drink the tequila.

July 29, 2009 at 10:13 amGood plan leaving the laptop and DSLR behind. There not needed… Well I took my D70 to Venice with me, but who can go to such a beautiful place and not come back with photographs that do justice to the Venetians. A vacation is a necessity to get away from the daily grind. Even if you love your job, a break is always well deserved.

July 29, 2009 at 11:45 amCouple of tips, get a really good road map as the roads are not well labeled and it is really easy to get lost, and watch out for the drivers.
Also, Coba is really amazing it is about 30-45 minutes inland from Tulum and has an amazing view from the top of the large pyramid and one of the only painted pyramids on the Yucatan.
Snorkeling in the Cenotes are also really fun. They are all up and down the Riviera Maya and most can be found right off of the highway.

July 29, 2009 at 12:08 pmSounds like an epic trip, Scott! I went down with a few buddies years ago and to see Mayan Ruins next to white sandy beaches and crystal clear blue water was a mind-trip. Lots of vivid colors in Playa del Carmen. I would second Kieran Lynn and recommend the Coba (Koba?) ruins. If you aren’t afraid of heights and holding on to a rope for your life… :)

Just be thankful you’re not sleeping in some shitty ship yard (that’s fun to say!) in Baku, Azerbaijan waiting for a ferry to randomly pick you up. Not much to do here haha. So while I’m here I come to places where I feel safe…like the “internet klubs”.
Enjoy your vacation!
