I’m Here / Spike Jonze

Posted by Alex

I didn’t realize the other day, when I mentioned Spike Jonze’s “I’m Here”, that the actual film had already been released. The trailer was exciting enough for me I guess. Now you can view the entire 30min film on the website. They limit the amount of viewers per day, so make sure to take a look when you can. I haven’t seen it fill up recently, but you never know. Props for a smooth web interface too — feels like a video game without being frustratingly slow or clumsy like most Flash pages.

The film itself is great; the opening sequence is especially well done. The music works really well with the visuals throughout, and of course the whole thing stars robots. They are remarkably expressive, what for being robots and all. I really like the combination of animation and lo-fi costumes; it works really well for this, just like WTWTA. The story is a nice one, a little sad/mopey, but I enjoyed it overall. I found myself more attracted to the uniqueness of the whole project rather than any specific aspect of the plot.

My favorite part is when the bearded guy in the car yells “You’re a ROBOT!!” into the main characters head. Awesome. Check it out here.

yes, its a unique project but, why she was *spoiler, spoiler* falling apart. there was no any explanation about that (it is a “story” after all). did she had some sort of a virus? and the end looks a bit sick. i mean, holding his head in her arms (…and happily ever after) – this should be a love story, right? its not sad, its oddish

I was hoping it was going to turn out sinister and she really just wanted to feel control by making him give her everything of his (as so many women do). I also felt the english accents annoyingly twee. Was kinda like watching a 20 minutes mobile phone advert.

That said the visuals are tremendous, which is what Spike does best!

I liked the part where the woman said that she was not allowed to drive. I would have liked to know what the with that was. The story’s end was not impressive.

Thank you Alex for sharing this. I would of never of known about this without the post. I have reposted on my Facebook page and I want so many others to see. Not really understanding the disappointment here…

I think you guys are missing the point, here. Sure, there were a few unexplained things within the story, but do they really leave you that confused in the end? The title is “I’m Here,” and the film shows what that means. It shows what a man (if robots have genders) is capable of doing for the one he loves; giving her everything he could and asking for nothing in return. He just wanted her to know that he was there for her, and would do anything for her.

No I fully understood the video. I just thought he pushed the sickly sweet levels too far on this one and it ended up coming across a little too twee. I realise he was trying to be poignant but it just came across a little cringey for me. Maybe I’m getting too cynical in my old age. I still maintain that the aesthetic and production were lovely though.

Nice! Didn’t noticed at all Jonze made this short movie. I’ve seen all three the movies he made and loved ’em all, so i’ll love this one aswell i guess. Thanks for sharing Alex.
