Everything you see in these stills and videos by Alex Roman is 100% computer generated. This is certainly the best CGI I’ve ever seen; I would normally say “virtually” indistinguishable from reality, but in this case the “virtually” doesn’t belong. The videos were created using 3dsmax, Vray, After Effects, and Premier. But what amazes me here isn’t just the execution, Roman crafts truly beautiful images with impeccable taste, something often missing from highly technical productions such as this. The man perfectly rendered a Mies van Der Rohe and an Eames, give him a medal! Maybe I can get some VR googles and map his work to the interior of my house and pretend to live in some modernist paradise.

I thought I had a bad workload trying to finish this new album, I can’t even imagine the man hours that went into just one minute of these videos. More videos at Roman’s Vimeo page and lot’s of stills and info at his portfolio site.

i’m with Andy, so this isn’t mapping photographs or something? I have no idea how CGI is done, my 1982 born mind can’t comprehend this future designing craziness

It’s almost scary how real these are.

awesome stuff, what i could see of it. i dont know what it is, but any Vimeo movie i try to watch doesnt stream well at all. lots of pops and is all herky-jerky…

Un-real, the lighting and textures, everything is just perfect. Music matches perfectly. Most of that very well could be mapped…

I used to create architectural visualization myself, for eight years, and even though I fully understand how this is done I am still blown away. I feel no shame in admitting that Alex Roman’s work is far beyond anything I ever produced. I’m sure the man hours it took to create the models was excessive, but what really throws me is how ridiculously long it must have taken for each frame to render. His passion for his work is evident.

The geometry work itself doesn’t look incredibly complex to me, it’s the execution that’s amazing. The post processing and material work is good, but it’s the cinematographic / photographic quality to everything that truly makes it class, combined with the atmospheric sound.

Daniel C, above, hit the nail on the head.

The first movie, in the library, is actually pretty simple in its geometry. The coolest thing about it is how slow the camera moved. It mimics the physical constraints of real camera trucks. It gives a weight and heavyness to the film that physical film has a virtual film tends to forget.

The sound, the execution is the best part about the films.

The stills are fantastic examples of 3D, such detail and attention given.

[...] This article caught my eye over at iso50 talking about Alex Roman’s work on highly realistic architectural renderings. Earlier this year I saw some very similar work by Alessandro Prodan and was amazed at the quality of the work that is being produced by a single person with off-the-shelf software and technologies (3DS Max, Maya, mental ray, Vray, paint effects etc). OMG! This stuff has totally blown me away! Incredible… I’ll never know if I’m watching “real” footage or not with any new movies that come out now. Crazy cool.
