Tycho Live In Toronto / New Poster
I just wrapped up the poster for the upcoming Tycho show in Toronto (shown above) which can also be purchased at the ISO50 Studio shop. I’m doing a solo art exhibition at Function 13 Gallery and then a live Tycho performance afterward at Nocturne on Friday, November 20th, 2009. This poster is sort of an alternate take on the gallery show poster (which will be released tomorrow), they are both based on the same subject but have very different aesthetics. This is the first time I’ve worked directly with a live model for a project — I shot her against a light bouncer with a flood light coming from the back to get the silhouette. Although rather time consuming, it was a pretty fun process and I learned a lot. You may notice that this piece in similar to the Coastal Brake cover in it’s use of negative space. I’ve employed this concept in various ways throughout my career (the Past is Prologue cover [2004-2005], for example) but have only recently found the time to truly explore it to the extent that I have with these recent pieces as compositions in this style are the most time intensive of all my work. When creating these, I treat the process more like painting than graphic design and so things can become much more complex. This particular piece is not quite as complex as some of the others, it’s a composite of about 20 image layers overlayed using various blending modes and masked by the silhouette image, the negative space was then filled with photographed paper which was colored using color balance. It will be on display at the Function 13 ISO50 Gallery show on the 20th.

Fantastic poster Scott. I did a silhouette very similar to this for an identity I was working on, except without all that cool crazy detail she’s filled with. Loving the negative space, real classy.
This is more so question than criticism, just wondering, is the date not meant to fully span the width of the type above it (Toronto)? It seems to fall a little short.

Scott, if possible if you could shed some light on creation of past prologue posters please… it would be really helpful to know how you create those coffee stain kindof masks… is it the coffee stain brush you use it or create a vector shape for scalability.. please advice. also if i may request please to publish a tutorial on poster designing with the vintage look and feel as you have on your posters please it would be really really helpful.

Very nice! This is very different from your other work. It’s cool that you’re branching out into shooting your own photos. I also like the texture on the purple. It looks like construction paper or a nice thick old matte dust jacket from a book.

Also, thanks for the heads up regarding your choice of typeface. I remember you mentioned a big font purge that left you with 30 or so go-to fonts… Any chance of blogging a list of what you kept? All the stuff I have is starting to resemble Comic Sans (in my mind anyway).

After reading some of the comments concerning this recent post, it looks like you may have to give a tutorial on the correct use of the word Typeface as opposed to Font. For example; the TYPEFACE/s Scott chose to use in the composition was Universe (and Helvetica). Fortunately he had that FONT/s on his computer or the poster might not have turned out so brilliantly. Your welcome.

Another masterpiece! I feel you’ve really become one of the greater graphic designers of our time. Your skill level is just so far up there. A true master of layering. Your more recent work has been different from your work of the past but you still carry your strong signature style. Really great work Scott!

@Diesel Police… I was probably being overly defensive then, probably from secret concern that I’d said something stupid. I actually agree with your take on the lack of accuracy (the whole font versus typeface issue is a good illustration which I see all the time). Worse for me is the misuse of the apostrophe, but don’t get me started on that one or we’ll all end up raging and burning things.
There is a link on this blog to a good article about the font/typeface thing but I’ll be damned if I’m going to put down my coffee to start looking for it.

I think you’re remembering Alex’s article on font purging. I need to do that myself but haven’t taken the time. I only use about 12 fonts regularly, and of those I have a handful of go-to stuff that gets used on pretty much everything. I reformatted a couple months ago and some of the legacy fonts didn’t make the jump, need to go back and get those setup again.

Heh, on that note, I’m on a new machine in the office running Windows 7. Which means, my font directory has been completely sanitized.
It is the best feeling ever.
I had hundreds of fonts, from classics to down right nasty hack-jobs.
