1940s Kodachromes

Posted by Jon

Beautiful, lush Kodachrome photos from the 40s. Kodachrome was the legendary color film popular among photographers like Steve McCurry, who shot the final roll after it was discontinued in 2009. See the rest of the set here.

The film quality is surely A-plus, but the story it vibrantly captures is even more amazing. I am far from being a war-hawk, but WWII pushed the technological and scientific envelop into the modern age. The third picture from the top–the mining plant–stands out in my mind for its depiction of the scale of human will and ingenuity. One hundred years from now, its corollary may be a picture of a futuristic mining colony on some far-out asteroid. Hopefully, war will not have been the impetus for it. But what else pushes technology to rapid leaps?

wow, the dynamic range of film still blows me away. Digital still falls way short in that category. I think I’ll bust out my 1982 Minolta this weekend… thanks for the post!

The first photo makes a fantastic background…
