The Minecraft killer?

Posted by Jakub

When I have the cash i’ll be buying an iPad 2, no shame in that. The first thing i’ll be buying is Sword & Sworcery. I’ve had a good time with Minecraft but this game looks amazing and it still does a number on me with the nostalgic graphics. I guess for any of the haters out there, you really can’t argue the fact some people really love this stuff no matter what the quality.

Absolutely love superbrothers take on 8-bit graphic nostalgia. Sword & Sworcery looks to have, all around (programming & music), fantastic art direction. I want to indulge!

That trailer is fantastic…one of the best game trailers I’ve seen in a long while. And I think the graphics are fantastic. And it looks like they’ve made some really fun stylistic choices. I think I’m getting an iP2 for my wife for her birthday in May, so I’ll definitely check this out.

Damn. These graphics made my heart jump into my mouth. Don’t know why. But this is so much more visceral than all the latest ultra realism.

There’s an interesting flash game called Endeavor that is on Newgrounds, and it has a similar vibe: graphics, music, and interesting motivation.

It’s pretty strange, but it’s short and sweet. Multiple endings. Check it out.

You’re joking right? Minecraft is the THE most successful independently developed gaming experience of all time.

It offers incredible amounts of flexibility in an emergent system that lets you define how you want to experience it.

Sword and Sorcery has nice art, but will likely not offer much in terms of actual, you know, gameplay. That said, I hope it will be good. The hype machine certainly has their back.

This looks like it’d be a pretty sweet game. Kinda need that touchtronic machinery first! But Minecraft I can still see myself playing years down the road. Minecraft reminds me of the scene in Inception, where they were lost in their own subconscious. It’s your own world to create, and it’s sort of like my zen garden haha.

Nonetheless, S&S looks like it’d be pretty fun to play.

I’ve been following Sword and Sworcery’s development for awhile, and it almost makes me want to get an iPad. It looks so awesome and the 8-bit graphics are definitely on par with the blocky awesomeness of Minecraft. However Minecraft wins simply because the nostalgia of 8-bit videogames just can’t beat the nostalgia of feeling like you are playing lifesize lego in Minecraft.

I picked up an iPad on Friday (they’ve only just come on sale here in NZ) and began playing this game last night. So far it’s awesome :)

I’ve been playing it this week and it’s brilliant, really atmospheric and beautiful, but also very clever, witty dialogue…

Confirmed: It’s great.

The art direction sets it apart among its peers; where 8-bit has become a bit of a fad in the past 3-5 years, S:S&S knows that “going blocky” on its own is nothing special. It’s all put together in careful detail, all elements visual & aural of a matching kind. Each stage/level/screen I have seen so far is a canvas to be slowly beheld, observed.

The movement/navigation system needs to be rethought, the dialogue copywriters were trying a bit too hard sometimes…but overall it’s quite a stunner.
