Current: Ghosts of Techno

Posted by Scott

While I was in Detroit for DEMF last month I taped a segment for Current TV as part of a feature on Ghostly International (the label which I record for as Tycho). The feature is a good introduction to what Ghostly is about and includes some interviews with a few artists (Osbourne, Kate Simko, and myself).

Yes, it was a bit early and I think I’d had one coffee too many for that interview; no, I don’t know why there are random clips of me taking pictures of dumpsters. A couple of the pictures I was taking in those clips are included in the Detroit DEMF post. There’s also a clip of some of the actual DEMF set towards the end. The whole experience was a bit surreal; I played the opening set at DEMF around 1pm after a long night, was weird to be playing outdoors, in the early afternoon like that. The coolest part was that you could see Canada from the stage (look across the river in the shot from behind).

Nice clip.
Interesting to hear about your musical influences. I was especially surprised you didn’t mention Boards of Canada…

Scott,

I’ve recently done some promotional design for Spectral, including events with Kate Simco and Osborne — both for events at Sonotheque here in Chicago. I know you’re familiar with Sonotheque, so perhaps one day you’ll return to play there again?

I count your work as among the most inspirational design I’ve come across in the last couple of years, so aside from a neat coincidence, it would be an honor if I ultimately got to design a flyer for an event at which you performed.

The designs can be found at the link below for anyone who’s interested…

I have some friends from Detroit, they say it’s a nice city, which from what I’ve seen from this interview (architecture, etc.), it looks nice. My idea of Detroit comes from movies like 4 Brothers where it’s basically a wasteland that consumes youth into crime and drugs.

Thought I would share that in hopes that it doesn’t lower anyones IQ. I am just astonished at all the different opinions on Detroit.

Current TV + Ghostly + TYCHO/ISO50 = score!!!

Scott, you should do a Current Pod on your posters for Obama or more about the shoegaze electronic scene!

I will definitely have to look into Ghostly more now.

I live just outside Detroit, and it is a great city. Downtown has a great atmosphere, and the architecture is quite interesting. It’s not nearly as bad as most people think, though it does have it’s rough areas.

Sure, I could be impressed with all your fancy imagery and musical endeavors but I must say… the thing I’m most impressed with you Scott is your ability to use two semi-colons in one blog.

Awesome.

Carmen-
thanks…there’s an adidas originals shop above the main Shoe Biz on Haight St. (San Francisco). But I got it a couple years back so wouldn’t be there now, but they always have at least one or two good things there at any given time. although I was over there last week and didn’t see anything too crazy.

mp-
funny, I was just at that shop in berkeley, didn’t find anything this time though.
I am from sacramento, I moved to san francisco when I was 18, then moved back to sacto, then moved back to sf again and am still here.
