Phoenix+Mux Mool+Royksopp
I don’t post many really upbeat poppy songs on here but its Friday and Phoenix have a new LP coming out and i’m super geeked to find out if its going to be great. It’s been almost 9 years since they released United which I first heard in the Ghostly International office as a intern and fell in love. I feel this track 1901 is going to be played really loud at every bar by June as a LAST CALL song which is good and also really really bad at the same time.
Mux Mool has a new EP coming out in March and has leaked a new song (that will stay unreleased) with the info on the “Just Saying Is All EP”. Nausican has this morning strut feel to it, you know that feeling when your having a good morning and saying hi to all the neighbors kind of like that Blackalicious track Make You Feel That Way.
Alright i’m not sold on this new Royksopp, its not what I like about the earlier material and it’s way too poppy for my taste. What do you guys think?

February 27, 2009 at 12:36 pmAt least this Royksopp album seems like it’s going to be better than the last one, which I thought was atrocious after such an awesome debut album.
Looking forward to some new Phoenix material!

February 27, 2009 at 1:05 pmIt’s def. catchy. Just seems like a song I can throw in the “background music work mix”. Nothing terrible but nothing great. It’s nice it’s less than three minutes instead of a seven minute happy overture that doesn’t go anywhere.
Hopefully Royksopp throws some darker tunes on the new album. Like Philip said… the last album was atrocious. Except maybe a song or two. I don’t want to listen to an entire album that makes me feel like I’m at a club in WeHo.

Agreed but i’d probably not even play it at work even, I do like the video more than the song but thats not even saying much. Well, here’s to hopefully the LP being amazing.
on a side note: nice pictures on Dropular

February 27, 2009 at 2:24 pmThe new Royksopp track is terrific, reminiscent of the amazing Melody AM but still fresh… I hope the rest of the new album is as good! Agreed on the comments about The Understanding being a disappointment.

February 27, 2009 at 3:29 pmOMG I love that Mux Mool sampled Nausicaa Valley of the Wind. Badass movie!

February 27, 2009 at 4:00 pmHave you had a chance to hear the rest of Royksopp’s new album?
There are a few songs I’m not too crazy about from the previous albums.
I’ll bet there’s still some gold on the new album.
In my experience the first single/video from an album always makes me scratch my head and wonder why they thought THAT song was the best one?

February 27, 2009 at 4:02 pmAlso… I want to add that The Understanding has about the same number of “WOW!” and “blah…” tracks for me as Melody A.M.

February 27, 2009 at 4:21 pmThe new Phoenix is going to be a smash, I just know it. Those guys have such an amazing knack for writing super-tight tracks that pack in so much good stuff. Really, really excited.
As for the Royksopp, I’m decidedly “meh”, but I have faith for the album. This single screams “commercial viability” with it’s rehashed Eple thematics and half-baked vocal bits. Perfect auto-ad fodder, but hopefully not a perfect indication of how everything on the new LP will sound.

February 27, 2009 at 5:46 pmthere seems to be just a little bit of wackiness in the royksopp tune, but then it is called happy up here…

February 27, 2009 at 5:56 pmI agree Paul, sounds like it is going to end up on a some car commercial by the summer! I agree with you all The Understanding was a big dissapointment, except for Sombre Detune, or Triumphant.

February 28, 2009 at 11:41 amI think it’s catchy, not innovative. I prefer the original samplers:

February 28, 2009 at 5:59 pmI just wanted to add a random note in here: This might just be coincidence (or perhaps not), but many of the songs you post on here I can browse betterpropoganda.com for and find in less than a minute. This is a big plus seeing as how I am a measly college student, on measly college funds. But now I can still enjoy great music, so… Thanks Jakub!

March 1, 2009 at 7:56 amI hate to be a downer, cause I usually follow and love what you post…but 5 outta 10 on the new Royksopp. 7 outta 10 on the Mux Mool and Phoenix, while quite good, was on the Lost in Translation soundtrack. Do you listen to the band Trans Am at all?
Jakub says:

I do like Trans Am, any track you suggest? i might be agree with you on the 5 out of 10 on the Royksopp now

March 1, 2009 at 12:34 pmWHERE can I get the 1901 EP? I assume it’s out because you clearly have the song, yet I can find it nowhere…

March 2, 2009 at 12:28 amDid Mux Mool use a sample from ‘Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind’? I love those Studio Ghibli movies ;}

March 3, 2009 at 6:26 amThis Royskopp is okay. It’s just kind of weird how “happy” it is. But i don’t know if i would call it bad. But the combination of the pop and it’s 2:48 time makes me me think it was written to sell to advertising.
Kevin says:
March 3, 2009 at 2:30 pmive always had a soft spot for Royksopp. they really stepped up their production quality with the last album and it really grew on me after a while. im really looking forward to the new album and since this track is only a couple minutes long, it sounds like a transition/intermission track. cant wait to see if they go on tour again.

May 2, 2009 at 3:47 ami think the Royksopp album is better then what people are giving it. I can’t imagine Roysopp writting these tracks with commercial accesabilty in mind…maybe thats just me. I just notice these days a lot of cynacism towards artists ‘selling-out’. not that it doesnt happen. just i dont think it happens as often as people seem to think. suppose thats a little off topic tho :)
