The Drums + Lone + Fehlmann + Mew
Went to Bowery Ballroom last night to check out The Drums, I fell in love with the music, the combination of eras in the sound was really refreshing. At times I thought Grizzly Bear meets The Cure and the guitar really keeps it catchy while the singer serenades and keeps the crowd feeling like you’re invited to dance on stage with him. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
I posted back in December on Lone’s LP Lemurian and got a lil bit of love and hate but I still listen to the record quiet a bit and so should you if you ever picked it up. ONe of my favorite labels just put his new EP at Werkdiscs which is run by Actress, definitely a great label and good pick up on that roster. This song Sunset Teens is a faster tempo compared to his LP songs but he still makes it sound Lone-ish, take that BoC comparsions, jk.
Kompakt’s 200th release is approaching and i’m anxiously waiting to hear what Wolfgang and Jorg are going to do. Back when Kompakt 100 came out I loved this Sascha Funke remix of Thomas Fehlmann, I just of played it everyday for months.
When I was following Trent Reznor on twitter I realized he kept talking about Mew and I remember never giving the band a proper listen, now i’d of loved to see this band live, a lot of detail here, do they really bring a vibraphone on stage or is that just played off a laptop somewhere on stage?

July 30, 2009 at 12:39 pmMew is a great band. Saw them open for Bloc Party a couple years ago and have tried to see them every time they make it to Boston. They do have a great show and do some clever video stuff while they play, you won’t be disappointed!

I’ve been to a whole lot of concerts in my life, but one of the top 2 was a Mew show in a small bar in Chicago. At such an intimate location, you’d never expect a giant projection screen to be unveiled — birds with baby head’s singing along to the songs had to be one of the most bizarre/cool things I’ve ever seen. Imagine the level of choreography to achieve something like this. Again, at a super small venue (don’t even remember the name of the bar anymore).
Their new cd is phenomenal BTW. Not quite as good as and the glass handed kites, but still a bit better than Frengers. Very excited to see what’s on the horizon for them.

August 3, 2009 at 8:51 amThe new Lone album, “Ecstasy & Friends,” comes out this month I believe. I’m really looking forward to it for sure. I don’t really remember how, but I managed to obtain the song “My Ami.” If this track is any indication of what’s to come, then we can all be very excited. It sounds like a late 70s, early 80s dance explosion on a skyscraper-lined fluorescent beach at night.
I would also check out his first album, “Everything Is Changing Colour.” It sounds a bit more BoC than “Lemurian,” but you can really hear how his style has progressed. Also check out his new EP, “Cluster Dreams.” It’s less of the wonky hip-hop stylings of “Lemurian,” and sounds more on par with the new “Joyreel/Sunset Teens” single. Plus, there’s a badass remix by Bibio.

August 3, 2009 at 8:20 pmmy ami was originally leaked at watmm by sean at dealmaker a few months ago. sooo good. to me it sounds like a late-80’s palm beach seniors home infomercial about active living/loving. personally i’m not a fan of his first album…it’s a little too aimless and it’s not nearly as inventive – he really forged something original and ‘lone-ish’ with lemurian.
super psyched for the new album.
