Last month Seattle’s Benoît Pioulard released another gorgeous LP to the world called “Sonnet” you can pick up the digital, cd, and vinyl on his bandcamp.

SUPPORT: SIGNED CD & VINYL

“The basis of the album was a series of field recordings of tones and unintentional harmonies that I made in the summer & fall of 2013 – whistling industrial air conditioners, bird songs, locust drones, washing machines – that I mimicked or interpreted on the guitar, making loops that developed into fuller compositions.

Several of the pieces are recreations of harmony loops that I heard in a series of extraordinarily vivid dreams, and then woke up and recorded.

A few pieces had lyrics and vocal parts that I ultimately removed; at a certain point the album became an exercise in restraint, so I strove to leave only what I felt absolutely essential.

Unlike most of my previous recordings, there are no digital / software after-effects on the album; all sounds are from analog tape and / or my few guitar pedals.” Thomas Meluch (Benoit Pioulard)

The sound of the fifth Benoit Pioulard full length is lush and verdant, a temperate rain forest of ear ecstasy that reflects the environment surrounding the artist. A mostly instrumental work, it is an adept melding of song and sound, melody and texture, the intangible and the palpable, that in an abstract sense recalls the more fractured and loose end of the 70’s krautrock movement.

Grouper + Pioulard + Pale Sketcher + Reich

New Grouper was unveiled today, its as exciting as when I put on her album for the first time, looking forward to hearing the B side to this 7 inch.

We’re going to have to wait until October before we can get our hands on Benoit Pioulard’s third LP Lasted. I follow his website though because he usually puts together limited runs of the record before the official release date, they sometimes include stickers, DIY packaging and polaroids.

Justin Broadrick has a history of creative work, as Pale Sketcher he touches more on the Ulrich Schnauss end of what we know. If City Centre Offices was around dominating today’s gorgeous instrumental market then they would be drooling over this record to add to their catalog.

We all hopefully have had a chance to enjoy a Steve Reich piece at one point or another, well this one grabbed my ear from the other room yesterday. Notice the vocal melodies Mr. Reich is duplicating and matching the notes he’s playing, beautiful work to just let play on.

CEO + Pioulard + To Rococo Rot + Mueller

CEO is half of Sweden’s The Tough Alliance, its upbeat pop that reminds me of the lighter side that the Balearic sound needed to keep that great genre going.

Benoit Pioulard does a non vocal remix of Owen Pallett’s recent single, great texture and echo.

Its been awhile since we’ve heard anything relevant from long time instrumental masters To Rococo Rot, i’m really enjoying this one, it has soo many hints of what I enjoyed from their first few records but touches on maybe even better melodies.

You probably won’t find Paul Mueller on iTunes because he’s a street performer that I saw in Manhattan yesterday, he hammered away beautiful melodies on his Dulcimer while I sat and starred. I’m guessing he’ll play more? Union Square L stop at around 3p? if you see him ask him to add the bells to the LP that were on his ankles, that combo made me miss 3 trains.

ISO50 Covers Series 2010: Vol.1

Cover art by S.Hansen

It was my birthday this weekend and I went out on a limb earlier in the week for a last minute HUGE favor from some close musician friends to do covers of some of my favorite songs or songs I thought the musician would do a cover of really well and surprisingly they agreed….20 of them! So here are the first 5:

Benoit Pioulard covers Hum: This is absolutely stunning, Benoit has a voice that i’d want to have if I could sing. I heard once that Benoit liked Hum so I asked him to cover a song by them and everyone should be more glad with this outcome.

Corbu covers Colder: This one was a touchy song since its probably one of my favorite songs of all time but I didn’t want an all electronic or post rock group to cover it so I asked Brooklyn’s experimental guitar duo to do it right and they did by taking it to a very unique and detailed level that i’m sure you’ll enjoy.

Alex Cornell covers Empire Of The Sun: You know him from his phenomenal work and posts on the blog and if you haven’t already seen him on youtube then here’s a very fine example of what he’s capable of creating musically.

A Setting Sun covers Tracy Chapman: A Setting Sun probably had the most challenging and off the radar cover to do but I thought a brighter doom metal approach might the only thing that would make this matchless pair up work and he killed it, especially check out how he gets to the end which is surprising after you hear the first few seconds.

Shigeto covers Boards Of Canada: This one is out there, as some of you may know Shigeto is a drummer that makes beats similar to Dabrye meets Caribou or something of that nature but loves to experiment so I thought why not see what he could do with a Boards Of Canada song since I know he’ll try to get crazy with it and not steer towards the guitar angle which I had to hear.

I hope you enjoy and collect them all. 5 more coming up next week.

Adelaide videos by Ryan Jeffery

Adelaide
You may have seen Ryan Jeffery’s name on the blog before, he did the Benoit Pioulard video about a year ago. I first met Ryan when he did live visuals for Adelaide, he floored me, not only was the band amazing but the visuals that Ryan put together couldn’t of been done more perfectly. Ryan is the real deal, he would have about 3 mic stands around him and would have the top bar sitting horizontal that held about 80+ looped pieces of 8mm film each taped together separately making it look like he was surround by 80+ fastened thin belts. He then had 2 vintage projectors that sat side by side and pointed in the same spot on the screen that sat behind the band. What set him apart from any visual show was that he layered the 2 projections and would slowly fade in and out live and did his damnedest to sync his visuals with the music while changing the 8mm film live like a mad man. It was pure genius and I still to this day couldn’t believe his dedication to the minute by minute work he put in for every show. To explain how breathe taking the show was I one time saw Adelaide play in Lansing, MI a few years back and they played a show that had 9 bands playing that night but all of them were hardcore bands besides Adelaide, I stood their with the band and most of us had some kind of western shirt on or a plain tee but every single other person I swear had a black hoodie waiting to mosh and once Adelaide started and Ryan had the visuals going each and every kid sat down in that building indian style like 1st graders and watched them play each song, I couldn’t believe it.

I really had to dig for these videos and figure out how to convert them so I hope you enjoy them as much as I do, I hope Ryan doesn’t mind that I grabbed them off a DVD that he gave years ago, maybe if enough of us fall in love with them he’ll let us keep them up.
