When I was down in LA for the Ghostly show, Jakub, Sam and I were talking and this Schaefer’s Beer ad came up. It’s one of those things that’s so great you want to wait to post it for as long as possible. Well, it’s been years since I first saw it and I guess now is as good a time as any.

This is Ed Kalehoff performing a jingle he wrote on the Moog Modular System for Schaefer’s beer. Even if you don’t know of him, you know his work; he did most of the music and cues for The Price is Right. Nothing tops this though, nothing. How great it would have been to live in a time when a beer slogan like that could fly. Also, was he scratching on that 2″ reel? Awesome.

KIDS COME HERE QUICK! ED KALEHOFF IS PLAYING ON THE MOOG AGAIN!

I can just imagine a small family gathering around a bubbly, vintage tv set on some mustard colored shag carpet… kids on the floor… parents in some odd plastic molded chairs tapping their toes neatly to the commercial. High as kites of course but the kids can’t notice. You get the idea.

I’m not sure how I feel about that. I was a little shocked watching it. So rarely do you get such a pure dose of 70s, um, magic. I think the fact that he’s so into it really takes it over the edge. It feels surreal, but I think it’s real.

matt-
yeah, he’s on top of things for sure. I don’t think you can write music like this and not be that into it.

While he was definitely jamming pretty hard on his Moog to it in 1973, Edd Kalehoff didn’t write the Schaefer jingle. Jim Jordan wrote in 1961.

We travelled there with our three daughters. We found all informations on amsterdam.info. Amsterdam it is a very beautiful town and the museums are great. But with the exchange rate as it is, we found it very expensive. Some museums were closed for refurbishment, but the views of the canals and hi-lights such as the Anne Frank House and the Artis Zoo (an old-fashioned place with a great array of animals kept in somewhat cramped conditions) are very memorable. The food is awful unless you want to spend a great deal of money and there is a cynical attitude to tourists that is very out of date (e.g. tapas marinaded pork was one slice of fried bacon on 1/2 a bread roll). We stayed in the serviceable but expensive Singel Hotel which was okay but its close proximity to a red light area made going out with the children awkward and there really was nothing charming or liberated about hurrying past the ladies in the windows. The same is true of the legal dope selling ‘coffee houses’. The whole bicycle thing is interesting. It is almost, but not quite, the eco-city of the future. Some cyclists are quite anarchic and we spent a fair bit of time dodging pavement mounted bad-tempered riders. Overall verdict was we were glad we’d been but wouldn’t go again as it feels over priced, out of date and sleazy – not the cutting edge hip family friendly town it’s sold as.
