Guest Music Post: Michael Cina

Posted by Jakub

Many of you know Michael Cina’s work as a Graphic Designer but he also has a great taste in music, he set some time aside and shared some music for the ISO50 readers, enjoy:

Supersilent
I am waiting for my copy to come, I preordered this half-way into
listening to an advanced copy last year. I think Supersilent is pretty
good (I love Deathprod), but this is Supersilent at their best. Parts
of the lp hint at a sparse Miles Davis when he was in his fusion
years, other songs sound like Vangelis. They really precisely capture
tones and moods on this album.

Talk Talk
I have been on a steady stream of the last two Talk Talk lps for the
last six months or so. There is something hauntingly beautiful about
these sincere records. From what I understand, they locked themselves
in a dark room and didn’t talk with anyone while making these albums.
You can hear it, you can hear the room swallowing you.

Nicolas Jaar
I won’t pretend that I know anything about Jaar, as I don’t, besides
he is somewhat connected to the Wolf + Lamb crew. You can tell from
his production, that he loves sound. He seems to be expanding off of
the road that Matthew Dear has paved and is making his own way. I am
looking forward to see where he goes with his music.

The Blue Nile
One of my friends Rob turned me onto this a little while ago. I have
heard of the band but really never knew what they did. This is the
second song is off their “Hats” full-length. It’s magic from start to
finish. They really create a vivid picture in this song.

Wow. The trumpet is ethereal. It’s very evocative of that lonely, sparse sound of miles. I can’t help but imagine the player sitting on an iceberg, gently floating along in a vast empty sea. Gray overcast sky. Nothing in any direction; No one to hear his song.

Great tracklist Michael. Nostalgic.
Great post Jakub.

I found some new musical favourites today.

Nicolas Jaar has to be one of my recent favorite artist, i think he is around 19-20 yr old and his has got some realy nice releases (Time for Us, Russian Dolls, Mi Mujer amongs others) and he has done some really nice edits on older tracks!

I d recommend anyone to look into his material.

Yes! I love the Blue Nile. If anyone digs their stuff I would definitely recommend High. It’s their “latest” album and it’s so pretty.

Okay, I’m really digging “The Blue Nile.” For some reason (to me) it’s reminiscent of some of Sting’s earlier work just after leaving “The Police.” I could be wrong…just a first impression.

I respect Cina’s ability to balance two lives: One of design and one of art. He excels in both. This is something I wish to achieve in my life. It is not an easy task.

So nice to see that someone still listens to and appreciates Talk Talk. “Spirit Of Eden” remains one of my favorite albums of all time. Thanks for sharing…

<3 I love Blue Nile I picked up a couple copies of "A Walk Across The Rooftops" on vinyl a few years back – "Tinseltown in The Rain" – is awesome!

It’s great to see some supersilent posted on this blog. I’ve been a huge fan ever since a friend showed me the 7 DVD. I still feel like crying whenever I listen to 7.4 – This song is just as brilliant. Their new one 11 is also fantastic, as well as all the Deathprod stuff (Morals and Dogma especially). I feel like they’re really onto something unique with their music. It’s one of the first successful fusions of jazz and electronic music that I’ve heard.

Michael – I really love your work, thanks for posting some great tunes.
