[...] Thanks to Marie playing this LP last weekend, I’ve gotten back into Air. This is one group that I’m either into or not; I can’t really just casually put their album on if I’m not in a proper “Air phase” – what this amounts to usually is listening to one select album of theirs a lot and getting the songs stuck in my head for days on end. Talkie Walkie is my favorite album from the French duo, and mixes all of their slightly odd ingredients in the way most fitting to my listening palate. “Run” isn’t necessarily my favorite song on the album – this is one of those cases where the sum is greater than its parts – but it is emblematic of what draws me back to this album again and again over the five years since its release: the great sense of melody warped through bizarre electronic effects, the minimal percussive elements, the Apple Talk vocals and the darkness that still sounds like a love song. In late 2007 I did a cover version of one of my other favorite Air songs, “Le Soleil Est Pres de Moi,” which couldn’t go on Empty Sound because of licensing concerns and also because it contains a sample from that one P-Funk song everyone knows, “Flashlight.” I love the song so I’ve taken the opportunity to once more get it out there.
This has a nice style through out. My only complaint is the vocals on 1979, which to me sound like parody.
