Drew Gardner + Phase One

Whenever I see images like the ones below by Drew Gardner, I always ask myself how the hell they do it. Apparently they do it with $36,000 cameras. That’s not to say it’s all about the equipment, but 39 mega pixels doesn’t hurt. The Phase One camera system seems pretty incredible: a medium format, full-frame sensor that can produce “Noise-free exposures of up to an hour”. Crazy…

Artistically Gardner’s work (examples below) isn’t really my style, but technically it always amazes me that people can create images like this. The Strobist recently mentioned Gardner and his Phase One Masterclass. At $2,850 I won’t be attending anytime soon, but it would be great to see the process of someone who has mastered photography on this level.

Haha, I wonder if anyone buys a camera like that online. I can’t imagine waiting for a $36,000 package in the mail…

I really the pic of the elephant actually; lighting is awesome.

Not a chance. Well maybe some super rich guy like we were talking about who buys a whole top of the line kit then leaves it in your house.

Buying it from the Calumet down on Bryant might be even crazier than online though.

side note. i follow this guys stuff pretty regularly, as well as this blog, and more and more he is reaching for the 5dm2. i realize we are talking about two different beasts of cameras here and things can be very job specific. but i just thought with the other posts on camera gear here, you might find that interesting. the bottom elephant shot is actually with the 5dm2.

I dont know, while technically is breathtaking most often technique makes a piece of work sterile.

It’s incredible photography. I have no idea how to do stuff like that. I also don’t have a huge team working underneath me and a giant budget. Although not my style, I can appreciate for sure.

The chick at 1:11….. wow.

My mom: “Hey, what are you looking at?”
Me: “Pictures taken with a $36,000 camera.”
My mom: “Now that’s just ridiculous. I suppose you want one now.”
