this image also reminds me of pictures i saw of Somalia back when it was under colonial control, very peaceful and Mediterranean-like, in contrast to the distruction of the last 18 years.
Stumbled upon your blog through another post, but I noticed this one. Here is a photo of the building in the picture above. It’s suffered a bit since that photo was taken.
i think that one of the features of these color images of that period is that it resembles a painted black and white photo, with an overall grainy texture. the colors sometimes really stand out from each other.
