Canon EOS 550D Jackie Chan Edition
Yep, that’s right. You’d better believe it, Canon is actually introducing a Jackie Chan edition of the EOS 550D. When I first came across this I didn’t know what to think. I’ve been a Canon user from day one and I’ve seen a lot of the seemingly pointless releases Canon has done in the past. I’m sure some of you can agree with me when saying that, but this release is seems to be something slightly more unique. However, in my mind I would much rather see Canon add some more lenses to their current L series lineup than to see another entry level camera. But of course I’m a bit biased as I shoot with a 1dmkII.
With my initial thoughts aside of how this edition may just be another pointless release, I could start to see some of the value in this product. It wasn’t until I started poking around for more images that I realized the user manual, neck-strap and wrap-case were also actually somewhat enjoyable. The case, in it’s own way, seems to be a nod to the old leather film camera cases and the gold/greenish colors that Canon adapted into this set, gave me an impression that they are trying to reflect back on the era of film.
Fortunately, those small features aren’t enough to win me over so the big question still remains: At $1465 for the set, would you buy this or a 7D?

What does Jackie Chan have to do with photography!? The green casing is cool, and the manual as well. It makes me wish this were an explorer’s model or something – throw in a Mark Weaver, Field Notes inspired guide, and sign me up for two of them!
Do you undersand the word that is coming outta my mouff?

The Design Police have spoken. A Mark Weaver inspired, designers edition is what we all need, but lets do that for the pro dslr’s and not the entry-level bodies.
As for Jackie Chan and photography, who knows. I don’t see the relation being any more than just a selling point.

Absolute rubbish. Over-priced rubbish.

Alright! Celebrity endorsed cameras! Next we will have sports celebrity endorsed cameras from Nikon. Introducing the Kobe Bryant D94238 camera kit including a 700mm telephoto lens for letting your inner pervert out from a safe distance. Although I’d prefer a Brett Favre camera.

I guess the japanese have celebrity endorsed chewing gum, so why not this? Although this doens’t appeal to me in the least, I do have to admit if Canon sold just the faux-vintage case for a 5D i’d consider buying it.
Get the 7D.
and I second(third?) the Mark Weaver edition.

7D all the way… as soon as I get the money for it!

7d, hands down. Then save your money for an L lens. I just bought the 7d kit with the 18-135 and I love it. However I’ve been using my friends 24-70 and decided I made a mistake by going with the kit lens. Live and learn.
Shelby says:May 5, 2010 at 1:53 pm
Chris, if you find a decent price on a 24-70, pick it up for sure. That is my favorite lens by far…well and the 85 1.2L.
@Navis. Celebrity endorsed binoculars in 2011? “Bringing out the inner perv since forever.”

wow, I can’t believe you guys. Have we become such snobs that we can’t see pure awesomeness right in front of our very eyes! This camera and it’s case rock. The instructions rock. And Jacky Chan is the freakin man.
Stuff like this is what I love about Japan… I’d highly suggest we all take the money we’re saving up for the mark deuce and spend it on a round trip ticket to anywhere in Asia.

What the hell?
Jarson says:May 5, 2010 at 5:52 pm
Quick! Name 10 things that aren’t Jackie Chan!
Joel says:May 5, 2010 at 7:05 pm
Between the two I would definitely pick the 7D but I’d take a 5D Mark II over either.
NAVIS says:May 5, 2010 at 9:43 pm
Yes. Yes we have. *drives off in white Nissan Cube endorsed by Jimmy Dean breakfast sausages*.

canon just needs to start making ‘old-style’ leather cases.

I own a 7D. I tried out a 550D a few weekends ago and I found the two at either ends of the spectrum in terms of quality/feel/usability. The 7D would be bought every time over this as all of the Jackie Chan stuff is just fluff.
Grant says:May 6, 2010 at 7:03 pm
I agree with canon needing to make some nice leather cases. Id imagine that having a Jackie Chan endorsed camera would make me want to take some pretty extreme & gnarly action photos.

i would buy a kitano takeshi edition :-)
