ISO50 Covers Series 2010: Vol.2
Last week I shared with you the start of a 4 [maybe more?] part series of covers that some of my friends did that was free to download here. Here is volume 2:
Calmer covers Bob James: I think when I asked Calmer to cover the Taxi theme song he thought I was joking but I actually wasn’t I always play this song when I DJ late nights. He does a great hazy looped cover which shows off his drumming skills and that was what I was hoping for.
Andre Obin covers Editors: Boston’s Andre Obin is the bridge from Synth Pop to Underworld/the older Kompakt sound, he covered Munich, he went with a great direction which was ditching the sped up original and owning the vocals.
Tom Croose edits Van Morrison: Our Tom Croose does what he does best which is turning rock oldies into respectable dance floor pleasers without referencing that whole Justice dance beat movement, back to the basics for 2010 and more from Tom Croose. [Sorry, this song has been removed due to a DMCA complaint]
D. Gookin covers Primus: Are you ready for your early teen years to flash before your eyes? D. Gookin might have just made the rowdiest intro for a song ever posted on iso50 but don’t let that fool you the cover is really diverse and he did it within hours on his drum kit. I asked Gookin to do it because on tour over a year ago he played a ton of Primus for us in the car and I could tell he loved them plus Pork Soda was the first CD I ever bought so I thought it would be fitting.
Charles Trees remixes Mayer Hawthorne: Ann Arbor, MI remixing Ann Arbor, MI both Mayer and Charles are around my age and from the same city as me. You may know Charles from his other alias Mingus Rude who gave us that very memorable Fleetwood Mac edit. Charles does a fantastic job of making Just Ain’t Gonna Work Out more heady and head noddy which totally made my ears smile.

Wow, this is a such a great selection. I cant stop listening to the Taxi theme song cover.(even if its a joke to calmer) I am in a total trance listening to it. This still manages to keep the feel of the original while adding something new you would never think of with bob james. Definitely my favorite bunch of covers so far.
Also loving the Tom Croose- Van Morrison cover.
anymore coming up beside these?

Hell yeah. Crazy to see a ‘My Name is Mud’ cover without a bass involved.
And nice one on a tough assignment, Colin.

I prefer the original Angela theme in its entirety, but this version is interesting.

The D Gookin Primus Cover is really cool and fresh.i think the angela theme song is really pretty great too. i actually dont even like the original song and Calmer really makes it listenable for me. Andre Obin does a dreamy yet engaging electro cover that also is really cool for the ears. Great ideas here. you have very talented friends jakub.

These are all really solid! Calmer played me a rough cut of his cover when I crashed at his crib in NYC a couple weeks ago, the final product is such a nice take on a tough theme that could easily have turned out sounding corny.
Also loving how both Charles and Tom Croose chopped it up and put a fresh spin on some great tracks. I can see either of these getting dancefloors going. Andre’s cover belongs in Mass Effect 2!!! Such a badass cover…

Another great collection of artists!! i agree with alex, that calmer cover is brilliant and could have easily turned out very corny. that bob james song is so cheesy and he made it something i can listen to all the way through now.
The tom croose cover is another one that caught my ear. a great hypnotic listen. really all of these are wonderful. i will be sure to follow the next wave of them, these are my fav so far.
thanks for sharing!!

i agree with everyone about calmer’s bob james cover being rad as hell (well done collin). but am i alone in loving the original too?! bob sure knows how to tickle that ivory!!
jakub, i know you’re with me.

tom,i think doing a cover to bobs song is un-godly hard. its not easy in a anyway shape or form. The original is very cool. i dont really like one over the other . they both do something totally different for me. Sitting here thinking about having a preference with one over the other makes no sense to me at all. After all we are in 2010. i am not sure if it even matters who likes what better. but what i do notice is bob james sounds nothing like calmer and i got to say i am happy about that. think i like the primus cover allot. its crazy!!!

i’m sorry, i think you misunderstood me… i wasn’t saying i like one over the other at all, i love them both equally!
i was commenting on people saying the original is corny.

I’m in love with the Taxi theme song ever since I heard DJ Drez put it as the background to the “thank yous” at the end of one of his mixtapes (mid-90’s sometime).
I’m digging this interpretation of it.

Valerie says:April 22, 2010 at 2:01 pm
Any chance the FREE download is still available? I tried clicking and got an “error 404” message. I tried right-click > saving it and well that wasn’t quit the remedy either. Would love to be able to bump these during my next 3am pixel pushing session. Thanks!
